I'm really just not that into Jaco.

Now before the lynching begins, I do greatly respect what he has done as a bassist. I am completely aware of the impact he has has on our instrument.

I am just not a fan of his material. I have given many videos on Youtube of him an honest chance. I find it is lacking groove with a very undesirable tone.

In the interest of an open discussion, I will gladly watch an listen to anything that you may suggest. I honestly do want to find something of his that I can really latch onto, but so far, I haven't.

Does anyone else feel this way about any other trailblazing bassists?

John Taylor is a respectable rock bassist.....But to even put him in the same sentence as jaco is pushing it. jaco changed the way the instrument is played. John Taylor was nearly a good funk player and a solid bassist but a virtuoso he is not

Jaco is not my favorite bass player but cripes could he play!!.

BUT, stating that Jaco had no groove simply means to me that your definition of groove does not match up with the traditional R&B definition of groove. Maybe you like to clap on the 1 and 3? Jaco's time and sense of backbeat is simply not open to question, unless you have stone ears. And, as I said, if you define groove in a non-R&B sense, then OK; but, that concept is not what most have historically referred to as groove. Of course, words and concepts change...

Good luck with the thread... I pretty much feel the same way, maybe a little more so than you. The barky-farty tone definitely does nothing for me. (and the rabid Jaco fans that seem to rather see you dead than saying "He's not my thing"... or at the very least would rather you shut up while they are free to talk in negative terms about other bassists... Fans like that are a huge turn off.)

Hopefully you found this in your search for material (Specifically "The Chicken" and "Come on, come over") in:
I don't find much groove in much of his work, but he could if he wanted and those tracks show it. Stuff like Portrait of Tracy and Teen Town... no groove to me.

Be prepared for a bunch of "Troll!", "He's undeniable!", "You here to start a fight?", "Why waste time saying this on a bass forum?"... I'm sure you'll see any I missed
