Well, I'm no John Taylor expert; but one of the bands I'm currently working with is covering Hungry Like the Wolf, Come Undone, and Some Like it Hot. So, I have been doing a bit of listening; and quite honestly it seemed to me that if anything, JT was a little influenced by Jaco, at least groove-wise. Fairly different genres; but I just can't hear a this guy is better than that guy thing going on. And I'm missing why that kind of discussion would matter.

You're not alone. And you're not trolling. So you should be safe :).

Jaco was technically skilled. What he did was mindblowing, on a level beyond comprehension. But sometimes it was so far beyond comprehension it was just that... impossible to know what he was doing. He wrote with seemingly jiving chords and played accordingly. Stuff which, to the untrained ear, anyway, would sound weird.

As for his tone, I sort of agree with you. I used to love the Jaco sound, now I can't stand hearing it. It just isn't there for me.

Jaco undoubtedly brought much to the world of bass; there is no denying that. But if you aren't into him, that's no crime against humanity. :)

I don't think you are anywhere near the only one.
I too agree that he is amazing - but his solo stuff just sounds like a cocaine addled brain with far too much talent playing every note he can pull off - which sadly isn't far from the truth.
His work as a support player I dig more because he isn't "wanking" on the instrument like on his solo stuff. I feel the same way about a lot of guitar gods too.
So, I'll see you in the forest...

I dont care for a vast majority of bassists that give TB a collective chubby.

If that is what he recorded through, it sure sounds barky-farty to me... No balls at all.

If that's not what setup he recorded through, then that isn't Jaco's tone... now is it?

And my opinion is the only one I'll be using to judge it, thanks.

I respect his playing, can't stand his music, I bought the essential Jaco 2 CD collection and should have flushed the $13 down the toilet. One listen and I was on edge and just didn't enjoy it at all. But, I'll never knock his importance or his impact on players. There's lots of great players I don't like. There's lots of ok players I love.

Depends where you place the beginning of trail blazing, right? Seems like Paul Chambers made a mark in his short career or Jamerson for that matter.

It's not a contest when it comes down to art/artist. You like what you like.
