Bro! Felix is a MONSTER without the fanfare. he plays a 6 string with a visionary's approach to his phrases. i might be trippin', but he can play all of Jaco's stuff and has taken it beyond. not for the faint of heart, though. i find Felix's music of the esoteric kind of jazz.

Taking your interest at face value, check out this two hour 4-part documentary (if you haven't already). Giants in musical history thought he was a true virtuoso.

I'm with the OP. Much respect for Jaco, but he does nothing for my ears, and a lot of that is his tone. I'm sure this will turn into a poopstorm and get closed when all the fanbois start getting butthurt. I recently saw on another forum, a pompous British jerkweasle, try to dress down a guy that didn't care for Jaco , because he didn't understand it. I think Flea played trumpet as a kid or something. He wore a sock on his dick. As a bassist he's not really good.

Felix plays (and rips) with the Jeff Coffin Mu'tet for one, and it's really enjoyable. Lots of funk, jazz, New Orleans style groove playing, but with odd times, weird melodies, and lots and lots of chops and creativity by all. I lean towards hip hop, classic jazz, and weird rock and metal, but when I want that kind of funky shred, that's where I go. It's really enjoyable AND impressive. As far as who's better...never really liked that question....

I don't find much groove in much of his work, but he could if he wanted and those tracks show it. Stuff like Portrait of Tracy and Teen Town... no groove to me.

Totally agree - when Jaco decides to groove it is solid and top notch - the other "fiddly" bits like Portrait of Tracy - though technically brilliant have little groove or melody to my ears. To each his own. There are lots of " bass gods" that I just don't get....

Thanks for the elaboration - and your point about the dubiousness of "who's better" is granted. I should have said, "He can play to the level of his father's genius?" or such. Art ain't a horse race (well, it is, but it shouldn't be!).

okay,.. i've seen video's of a very young Felix playing some of his fathers most popular stuff. there's one of him trading verse's with Victor on a Jaco cover. But,.. this video was playing in the background one day and i was floored. i can't explain it in musical terms, but the vibe was good.

The way I did . One was reading music and playing professionally as a child. Then there's Flea.

I get your point though and honestly in almost any other case it's valid. JPJ is/was honestly just a bad-a** of the highest caliber.

If you wanted to extend that comparison to Les Claypool and Flea, for example I'd support it, despite being a huge Primus fan.
