The way I did . One was reading music and playing professionally as a child. Then there's Flea.
I get your point though and honestly in almost any other case it's valid. JPJ is/was honestly just a bad-a** of the highest caliber.
If you wanted to extend that comparison to Les Claypool and Flea, for example I'd support it, despite being a huge Primus fan.

okay,.. i've seen video's of a very young Felix playing some of his fathers most popular stuff. there's one of him trading verse's with Victor on a Jaco cover. But,.. this video was playing in the background one day and i was floored. i can't explain it in musical terms, but the vibe was good.

And still a little teary-eyed from the first six minutes, which I found really moving. Jazz always stirs such complex, subtle and even conflicting emotions when it moves one.... I suppose that's part of what makes it a "higher" form than pop (ducks for cover)?

Respect for technical ability, and enjoying the music made with this technicality are distinctly different things.
I would rather listen to Iron Maiden, than to Dream Theater.
Both killer bassists, world's apart on the vehicle and style.

I'm really just not that into Jaco.

Now before the lynching begins, I do greatly respect what he has done as a bassist. I am completely aware of the impact he has has on our instrument.

I am just not a fan of his material. I have given many videos on Youtube of him an honest chance. I find it is lacking groove with a very undesirable tone.

In the interest of an open discussion, I will gladly watch an listen to anything that you may suggest. I honestly do want to find something of his that I can really latch onto, but so far, I haven't.

Does anyone else feel this way about any other trailblazing bassists?

BEFORE the bashing begins, please consider the following:

a) One does not have to "like" the artist's material to appreciate the genius, innovation or creativity.
b) One can appreciate and respect the artist's style, contributions, work without it being a personal favorite.
c) One can enjoy certain aspects of the artist's work without enjoying the overall whole.

For example, Picasso was a gifted, genius artist who co-founded the Cubist movement. An individual may not "like" or particularly enjoy Cubist art work (maybe you are more of a Van Gogh post-impressionism, Renoir, Rembrandt, or Dali , etc. etc. person). However, you can still see and appreciate the innovation that that artist has contributed. Even if it is not your thing.

Also, one can appreciate the artist's use of particular techniques to elicit certain emotions, feelings, tones. Even if you don't like the overall painting (or in this case, song).

So, Jaco was definitely an innovator. Whether you enjoy his work in parts or overall is purely subjective.

To the op: I think very valid question, so hope you don't get lynched.

I have already seen the proof with mine own eyes.
I was 15 in 1985. More girls at my high school wanted to bang John Taylor than wanted the captain of the football team.

Duran Duran was my first big stadium concert, in '83 I believe. There was a largish video screen high above the band. Nick Rhodes, by far, was the Duran that elicited the most girl-screams whenever they showed a close-up of him. I remember he looked pasty, like Edward Scissorhands, and wore a 1700s French getup. A lot of the keyboard stuff was sequenced. It never looked like he was working very hard back there.

Just re-watched a few Jaco/Weather Report videos to re-familiarize myself with the man, the legend. Total wanker.

The op comment was fine until he said lacking groove and tone. After that just lost all respect and credibility. Do you really think every top bassist would love Jaco if he had no groove. And tone is all about the song and how it fits with the music.

It's fine to not be into his music. Just keep it to yourself next time.

The OP is entitled to his opinion,Jaco was a Beast of a player,and his style and technique was unorthodox but the music is something that you either love it or you hate it, I myself don't care for it either,but I wish I could play like him...
