I Miss The 2x15!

It makes me sigh every time I think of my rig when I was a youth. A Dual Showman 2x15 with JBL D140's and a Dual Showman head. Later, a Crown DC300 and an Alembic preamp.
This was used with a 1960 P Bass. My small rig was as Ampeg B15N with a D140. These rigs spoiled me for life.

I think (only my opinion) the reason it worked so well was because the box was rather shallow and the speakers spoke a little quicker with more punch and highs. I'm taking into account the music and basslines I was playing at the time. I don't honestly think I'd be as happy using that same type of rig now. The music I play has changed, as well as my sonic roll in the music. But I sure did love those 2 D140's in the Dual Showman box with that Fender head...sigh.....

Although I really like my 610 and 810, I'm also keeping my 215 - it's a great sounding cab...

I disagree that a 410 is louder than a 215(a good 215, anyways) - atleast IME, I've yet to see the 410 that can get louder than a PH215, or my Peavey 215D-BW with Eminence Kappa LFAs in it...

For classic rock, blues, or country - a 215 has always worked really well for me...

I hear that - the rig that really spoiled me was a Sunn 2000S head running into two Sunn 2x15 200S cabs loaded with JBL D140s!

I still have my original Acoustic 140 head with the 106 model
2x15 cab from 1975. It's indesctructable apparently. It will
neither fit in my S70 Volvo in the trunk or in the back door to
the seat though it did fit in my previous ride, a Mazda RX7
hatchback. Thus it has been relegated to a permanent jam
space at one of my olg guitarist's basement. At 135 lbs, I am
fine with leaving it there.

I originally played it with a Gibson EB3, always on the bridge
pup, and that combo would just snarl when turned up. In the
right node, you could pull some very convincing feedback out
of it with judicious control of the volume and distance from
the speakers.

My style has changed radically in 35 years, a Aggie GS112
works fine with an EdenWT400, an SWR SM900 and Goliath
4x10 is the big rig I hardly ever use.

I haven't done it, but someday I would love to hook all that
stuff together. Just once where I could let it out to see what
it could do.

Ahhh, 2x15, my favorite was a small Dual Showman cabinet that standing on end was as wide as the head and only about 33"-34" tall. had it loaded with SRO's, what a sound. Too heavy if I recall, that cab had only 1 Fender handle.

Yeah, go for a good vintage SUNN 2000S cabinet. :D
There is nothing better.

IMO.:hiding:

That's similar to what I'm running. 2000s head into a 2000s cab with JBL K140s. I doubt there is much better. Except for the 2000s head into a 2000s cab and ANOTHER 2000s cab.......which I will be running sometime before the end of 2011.......

Awesome! :)

The first real bass amp I got to use when I was starting out was a 2000S with matching cab. Maybe that is why my hearing is the way it is these days.:eek::eek:

My Bergantino NV215 is THE best cab I've ever played through.

Has a 6" hi mid driver, is a sealed cab- nails a vintage vibe superbly & at 36" high is a BREEZE to schlep

I DO take my Bergantino AE212 to where I don't need the 'OOOMPH' of the 215 or for gigs where stairs bad access etc is involved, but an SVT or Mesa Walkabout thru this NV215 is HEAVEN!!

Started with a roll and tuck Kustom 2-15. Peavey 2-15. PV with Force 15's, PV 2-15 with Eminence 3015's. The 15's generally need more breathing room than stock cabs allow.

Now TL-606 with 3015's. A pair of them, about 45 lbs each. Less than $200 each to build. Single 15" 606's give me a cab for practice, and cab for home, both for louder gigs, and the pair go in the back seat of a Corolla.

The 2-15 won't do that.

The TL-606/3015's are a nice pair, but they have been gathering dust since the Greenboy fEarful 15/6/1 build.

The 3015LF and 6.5" mid will eat 2-15's for lunch.

I tried the other stuff, and I keep coming back to 15" drivers.

The Eminence LF drivers are so cool, I'll be building a 12/6 to have a light weight cab.

Gibson bass into a Sunn 2000s driving a couple 2 - 15 Sunn cabinets. Thats the cats meow. You clear the tables, rattle the windows and get the old lady three blocks away calling the cops. Now that's bass. So big and beautiful you don't even have to play the right notes. I do miss the good ole days but I don't miss those high tech monitor systems from the 60's. I don't miss reconing all those JBL speakers.
