How about the Musicvox Spaceranger or Spacecadet. The guy from The Polyphonic Spree plays one and, although I love their music, I think the bass is really geeky.

I was actually considering a violin bass. But we tune 1/2 step down. I wonder if a short-scale bass would handle that?

I second the G-77 idea. Nothing would fit better.
Unless of course you'd resort to a keytar but I don't think you'd want to go that far.
