i need a new head

so lets start with a little story. about four months ago i traded in my old crate head toward a brand new peavey tour700 shortly after i purchesed a used ampeg 8x10, at first i was very impressed with the combination, (even more so with a sans amp into the power amp) but i think it was because i was comparing it to my old crate stuff which sucked. well anyways now i am not so into the amp. it seems to be lacking in the power section and the ddt speaker protection seems to come on way to early and the amp cuts out any time i do any slap or pop at band volume. so i want to upgrade to something with more power/headroom. my main basses are 4 bangers a spector ns-4 crfm with emgs, and squier vint.mod 70s jazz and we sometimes venture down it to drop c tuning i think ive narrowed it down to these 6 amps but i am open to other options. i am in a rock style band so i need to be loud and powerful. i love mike;s tone from alice in chains (love, hate, love or got me wrong are good examples) i also like justin chancellors tone. i also need a good tone for slapping. any help would be greatly appreciated and i know i should go try them out myself and i will im just loooking for pros and cons from people with experiance.

Look i voted for the GK 1001 RB bc it is the best for what you are describing. I agree with iplay4-5 in that a tube head would be great, I have an SVT II (non-pro) and it is similar to Mesa's 400+, you just can't go wrong with that kind of power esp for rock. I play Thrash, Classic Metal, Hard Rock and once ina while mess around with Latin beats and Blues.

If you don't go all tube, Mesa's are good for a hybrid. If you go Solid State you are looking at GK.

AN SVT-CL IS OK BUT WHY NOT GET THE REAL THING LIKE AN SVT-VR OR A MESA 400+!

I do not like Ampeg's hybrids (the pro section) they are ok if you play Jazz and are not going to get down and dirty. You want to get down and dirty and I love Alice and Chains...get dirty man go with GK, Mesa or a true SVT (VR or a used SVT II(non-pro))

I voted Sansamp+poweramp. You could evenuse a tech 21 Programmable DI.

This gives you 3 amp sounds in one. I am stupid for selling mine, I should have kept the damn thing. HMMM, I bet I can buy another one...

Anyway,
Best of luck. If you go all tube, don't go with the CL, do any other all tube ampeg but the CL.

best advice ever, take your bass, your cab(or make sure they ahve your cab at the store, adn try out as many amps as you can next to your current lacking amp.

The SVT4 is not a very good amp IMO. Blahish tone, not as powerful as you might think. However the 6pro is very nice and would be a better match IMO.

I voted for the 1001rb-II as well. I had one by itself a couple of months ago, and have one now in combo form in my 1001/212 neo combo. Great sounding, plenty of power, and not too expensive.

And what exactly is wrong with the SVT-CL head? I play through a CL head and an ampeg 8x10 when I jam at a friends house (rig provided by the friend). If it weren't for the high price, I'd pick one up myself. It seems to have a great tone and plenty of power. I haven't tried any full tube heads to compare it against though.

What do you guys think of the mesa walkabout head? It sounded great at lower volume when I tried it out at GC the past few times, but I was told it has a nasty distortion at high volume. Is that not true, common with the walkabouts, or could there be a pre-amp tube/other problem?

I've just picked up a Traynor YBA 200. Playing thru an old ampeg 8X10 it sounds way better then the Ashdown mag 300 that it's replacing. Can get louder remaining clean. Not a fair comparison but all the same...

one of you earlier had mentioned the Mesa Boogie Titan V12. That's what I'm looking at. I've read very possitive reviews, just curious if anyone else here has used one and what they thought.
I was looking at the GK 1001, the price is great. But then, my band played with Five Finger Death Punch and the bass player had the Titan and I was FLOORED. It was so loud and sounded amazing, BUT he is endorsed and probably has a lot more "hotrodding" than the average Joe.
Here's the difference for me though. GK 1001 = $750.00 vs. Mesa Boogie Titan V12 = $1600.00. Big difference there. Is there as big a difference in the amps???? Another popular amp that I've seen lately is the Aguilar 750, but at like $2400.00 that's outta the question.
By the way, I am brand spankin' new to this site and I extend a HUGE hello to all my fellow bass players from Reno, NV!
