I need an interface that will do at least 12 simultaneous

Perhaps a Tascam US-1641?

I picked up one of these from a fellow TB'er for a song.
I've been using it at home with no trouble so far.

I have been looking into these and the us-2000. Some user reviews on the 1641 are not that great but those could have been user errors.

Anybody else have experience with these units?

The TASCAM in question (US-1641) is actually quite intriguing. I got on Sweetwater to see the price and was surprised by a the very positive reviews. There was a guy that mentioned recording his band's practice on five simultaneous tracks without any issues whatsoever. Another guy even claimed to have recorded 12 tracks without any trouble. That's impressive!

I'm usually one that recommends Firewire interfaces if they'll work in your situation because USB (even 2.0, it seems) has a bad reputation when it comes to latency in recordings. I've usually heard that if you'll be recording several tracks at one time, Firewire is a better option. Perhaps it is time for me to reconsider. There seems to be an overwhelming amount of positive feedback for these interfaces.

The bad reviews on the Tascam US-1642 are user errors as far as I can tell. I've had mine for close to a year now and have nothing but stellar results. Here's a thread from another guy that was asking for some advice and we get into a pretty in depth conversation about some stuff. check it out and I'll fill ya in on any other questions ya have.

....and as a side note to some of my fellow TB'ers.....

notice how I did that politely and didn't just say "USE THE SEARCH BLA BLA BLA"

You can sync a couple of daws together
smpte or mtc if you're interfaces allow, or something like midi-over-lan
Invalid Link Removed

Even without this, you can just simultaneously record on two daws no connected, then copy the tracks over to one machine and nudge them around to sync up.
If you rarely use all the inputs, but you and a buddy have enough inputs together, might as well share the work.

I believe that is the monitoring. It is supposed to be capable of sending the 16 tracks. Can anybody help confirm this? Thanks

Yeah your right. It has a set of stereo outs with a Vol on the front for the monitor outs and 4 other sends, i haven't even had anything plugged into them yet so can't really speak to them. i have a Behringer POWERPLAY PRO-XL HA4700 plugged into the monitor outs and my monitors plugged into the outs of that.

It dose sent 16 tracks to record, but to break it down "for real" its like this...

FRONT
8 XLR w/ mic pres w/trims (level knobs)
2 1/4 Guitar/Line w/trims (level knobs)

BACK
4 1/4 Line in no trims (-10 +4 switchable)
1 MIDI
1 Optical

that's the 16 ins breakdown. so with no other equipment you are looking at being able to do 8 tracks with mics.

I have a TON of recordings but don't really know where i can host them. I do band practices all the time. I would be willing to send ya a sample if ya want me too. PM me you Email and Ill shoot ya one or give me and idea where I can upload one and then anyone can check it out.

It seems like a lot of people use Sound Click for hosting audio tracks. That allows people to stream them; you may have to register, though. Otherwise, my buddy would send me song ideas using Invalid Link Removed. You don't need to register for that site.

Thanks man! I'm sure that the clips would prove to be helpful to others that are considering this interface!

Awesome. Thanx for the links. I will get set up with something tomorrow and find some trax that are not too embarrassing and get them hosted for ya all to hear. I really love this interface and think for the money it is the way to go. I spent a lot of time researching on home studios (probably more than a year before i bought my first piece of it) and this one seams to be the best bang for the buck.

well i finally found a site that would work for me for now. the ones you suggested theory028 were trials or only allowed 10 meg and this one is just over so i went with filefreak. anyways here ya go. and I'm open to any criticizems (sp), this is the first "real" recording I did for my singer that got married. He wrote this song to dance his first dance with his wife.

I will try to find a good take of a song with more tracks open at the same time. this one was a max of 3 at one time (the acoustic guitar).

Thanks for sharing the link! The quality is quite nice. I'm impressed, especially when considering the price of the unit.

Did you mic the acoustic guitar? If you did, I'm curious about what you used. It seems to have captured it very well. It certainly sounds better than the recordings my buddy and I did with his acoustic guitar. We used an MXL 990 and a direct line from the built-in pickup. It still sounded good but not as authentic as your song did.

I'm going to bookmark the site that you used to host the song. It may come in handy someday. Nice find!

Wow man thanx so much!!!! That song was done like this....

Ibanez acoustic guitar were recorded twice in this configuration

1) small diaphragm condenser (from a Digital Reference drum mic pack) @ 12 fret slightly facing sound hole.

2) small diaphragm condenser (from a Digital Reference drum mic pack) over right shoulder about 2 ft facing right @ guitar body.

3) large diaphragm condenser (MXL 990) right behind the right hand about 6-8 inches from the body

4) internal guitar pickup

The Sm Dia mics were ran into a Behringer MIC2200 2 channel Tube pre and the Lg Dia mic was ran into a PreSonus BlueTube pre.

the solo was done with a Gibson Les Paul Custom Studio thru the PreSonus BlueTube pre.

the Vox were done with the MXL 990 and the PreSonus BlueTube pre.

here are two more links of 14 track raw recording of practice. the only thing i did was put a little compression and a master limiter to keep the volume at a decent level but its pretty raw.

www.filefreak.com/files/718776_gf9xp/Knock You Down.mp3]Knock You Down.mp3

and how did you do that little link thing with the name of the song?

That is an interesting technique for recording an acoustic. I've been meaning to record some more acoustic stuff so I'll be sure to give that arrangement a shot. I'll have to dig around and see if I have any decent mics lying around.

To make a link, you have to use the URL tags. There is a button that looks like a globe with a chain link that you can click.

Usually you can just past the URL and the forum will automatically make it a clickable link. I think the spaces in the file names are throwing it off, though.

I'm just making them clickable so I can save them. Firefox likes to play the files in the browser, which doesn't work well for me. Your original links worked just fine. I was able to click them and it redirected me to where the file is located.

I'm going to download these and listen to them now. Thanks for posting more! I'm excited to hear how the TASCAM works for recording practices. Fourteen tracks at once is very impressive! It'll be interesting to hear how it turned out. :D

Those recordings sound really good for being, for the most part, untouched. It sounds like you'd be able to get a really good sounding demo if you spent a little bit of time in something like REAPER or Cubase. Very nice! Set You Free is a really cool song, by the way. It reminds me of Jonesin' by 40 Below Summer, for some reason. It's weird listening to your first sample (In The Air) and then these two. ;) Your bass can be tough to hear at times but it sounds good. What gear were you playing through?

If you guys ever rerecord or remix your songs, I'd love to hear the results. :)

Thanx for the positive feedback and information. :)

Yeah its kinda night and day huh? "In The Air" is a song our singer wrote for his girlfriend (now wife) and the others are the latest crop of songs from our band Sonic Ash (Link Removed if your interested in the older stuff) and just a preproduction of them. I tended not to run my bass too loudly in the recordings of practice so we could hear the subtle differences of the guitars and vox so we could make tweaks and if I really wanted to hear what I was going to sound like I'd do some mixing or just rerecord myself. our setup was this...

Kick (condenser), Kick (Dynamic), High Tom, Mid Tom, Low Tom, Floor Tom, Stereo Overs

Laney/Marshal 4x12 SM57 + DI out of head
5150/Peavy Road King 4x12 SM58 + DI out of head

GK 700RBII DI

2 Vox

As far as the acoustic recording goes the 12th fret is kinda a standard placement and I found the "over the shoulder" trick from one of my searches (I got it bookmarked I'll try to find it for ya), its suppose to give the sound that the artiest hears from his guitar, and the Lg. Dia. at the body was just for kicks and it gave me a really nice kinda bassy sound to play with and the DI of course. I just mixed to taste. The main tracks are those four from the second take, and I think I used the DI from the first take with heavy chorus and flanger way in the back to thicken it up.

Now that I think about it we kinda highjacked hermanmunster thread...sorry man I hope this is helping you and anyone else that might want this kinda info.

I'm still looking. Is it possible to use two of these at one time? I would rather use two if possible so I can just use mics with no extra equipment for the line inputs. I may just go with a presonus or m-audio. Can anybody tell me if the m-audio fast track ultra u8r can be chained together to use two?
