I need an interface that will do at least 12 simultaneous

I'm still looking. Is it possible to use two of these at one time? I would rather use two if possible so I can just use mics with no extra equipment for the line inputs. I may just go with a presonus or m-audio. Can anybody tell me if the m-audio fast track ultra u8r can be chained together to use two?

My experience with M-Audio has not been good. If you use it outside of a ProTools environment, it either limits the amount of tracks you can record with at a time (I don't think I've ever seen it go past 1 track at a time no matter how many channels it has) or it flat out doesn't work.

I use the M-audio Profire 2424. 24 inputs (8 mic/quarter inch, 16ADAT). I have a Behringer converter going ADAT into it so I get 16 mic channels. I usually do drums and stuff through the Behringer because the mic pres aren't the best, but easily good enough for drums. The pre's on the Profire are actually really decent and I've always gotten good results from them. I can't speak about any other M-Audio interface, but the Profire has my vote.

This sounds like something I might try. Thanks

I found out you cant chain the Tascam. I have a Allen & Heath zed12fx and was thinking I could use the inserts to send to the Line Level inputs on the Tascam. Anybody know if this can be done. Will this still allow me to use the mixer for my PA at the same time?

IME, If you're not using ProTools, I would stay away from M-Audio.

I use a Behringer XENYX 1002B 5-Channel Mixer that I run my vox mics into and run the L/R mains out to my 9 and 10 input of the Tascam and then run the monitor out to my power amp. this allows my to pan the trax coming into the board to Ch 9 (L) or Ch10 (R) and use the main sliders for levels then i use the monitor levels for the PA.

If you look @ this thread http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=669203 in post #6 I break down my set up (although I have changed it up a little, my Behringer now goes into Ch 9 and 10 in the front). I know you said you really dont want to buy anymore gear than the interface but you might be hard pressed to do that and get 12Ch with out breaking the bank. My set up ran me (minus mics and cables and what not) $600.00 and I can do 13Ch with mics.

I'd like to use the inserts if this is possible. That way I can just use the pre's on the Allen & Heath by sending a direct out to the line level inputs. That would solve my problem with no extra gear.

The presonus firestudio's are chainable but are Firewire. To me with the capabality of USB now I'm wondering if Firewire is dead.

So according to Allen & Heath inserts are a no no. I wont be using that. Though I can get the Tascam at a great ptice it doesn't have some of the features I want. I think I'm looking at a Presonus Firestudio or a Focusrite Saffire pro 40. Anybody have experience with the Focusrite? I would just eventually get a second mic pre and run it thru the adat for the amount of tracks I want.

I'd look at the firestudio tube, or even a couple of used firestudio projects. You're looking at 10 mic pre's in the tube, and 6 more inserts. With a couple of the projects (you can find a couple used for less than a new fs tube), you can daisy-chain and end up with 16 mic pre's. The daisy-chaining makes it nice for "growing" your rig. I'm running the project and a mobile daisy chained, and it works great. No issues at all.
