I need help getting a Krist Novoselic bass sound

Hey,

I don't know if this is the right place for this topic, but I need help getting a better Krist Novoselic (Nirvana) bass sound. I'm playing Lithium and I have a RAY34 and a Fender Rumble 75. What settings can I change on either my bass or amp, or both to get a better sound for Nirvana songs?? Feel free to move this thread if its not in the correct category.

I don't think he uses a dirt box at all for the recording, and being it's on Nevermind I think he was rocking a Gibson bass with humbuckers and Ampeg.

Try everything at noon, and adjust your mids and treble by rolling back on them and also play with your tone knob to take away some bite but keeping a little bit of it. His tone was rather smooth on the recording but rather raunchy and wide open live.

IDK about the specifics, but out of all the basses I've played, the Fender Jag sounds a lot like him. Just pick really close to the bridge to get a surf sound, and it sounds real close.

He does use a Rat on the album, but not on that track.

I agree with most of the posts here that an SVT-II is going to sound different than a Fender Rumble. What kind of eq settings are you using? Are your strings fresh? Are you using a pick?

get a fender jazz bass. my friend's in a nirvana cover band and he uses a mim one and he sounds just like him. he leaves all the eq dials on 5. he even gets the sound when he plays out of his crappy little silvertone practice amp

On Nevermind Krist played a natural 1974 Gibson Ripper through an Ampeg SVT-400T. His graphic EQ was set in a scooped mid pattern and he played with a pick on fresh Rotosound Swing Bass 66 strings.

One thing to note: on the amp in the background we can see that the shape of the EQ is not the standard 'smily face'. The two lines are straight, not curved. Hope it helps! Here's their sensational show at the Paradiso 1991. He uses the glorious Ripper.

PS: The video only starts after Drain You. I'll also give you the Lithium isolated bass from Rock Band.

Well that was an absolute joy to listen to one of my all time favourite bass lines soloed like that! Thanks for posting it
