I need help... PLEASE!

So I just bought a used Ibanez Gio, I was putting the strings on and I have a odd problem. So I put the E string on it seems to tighten up good, than the A string and it goes well too. Than I started tightening the E string a bit more and there was a little pop. I look and the string is loose, I go to tighten it and it only tighten to a certain point until the string post wont tighten up anymore but the E string is still extremely loose. The string post will loosen, but won't tighten past that point! Can someone tell me what happened and how to fix it?!?! Thank you!

Where did the truss rod become involved?

I'm not understanding why you are adjusting the truss rod. You are putting on strings, right? Are the strings slipping on the post? The truss rod is there to adjust the relief on the neck once you have installed the strings and tuned them to pitch. It is not to tighten the strings.

Sorry guys I'm definitely mixing terms up, I'm new to the bass. Anyway not the truss rod, but the string post for the E string won't tighten the string but the turning key still moves

Check the string, you may have overtightened it to the point it is stretching and wont tighten anymore. There should be visible signs if that is the case.

I have had a similar problem before, I wasn't paying attention and cut the string too short and when I tightened it there was a 'pop' and the string was loose. If the E string you took off the bass is still in one piece (ie you didn't cut it off) then compare the length vs the new string. If the new string is too short you will need to start again with a new set of strings this time making sure they are correctly cut to length.

I noticed this is a bit deferent on this string than the rest, is this it?

That string is normal unless you cut it too short.

Do you have a picture of the string post?

This sounds like the issue to me. That you're not putting the string in correctly and are trying to wind it up anyway.

You need to make sure that the tip of the string is seated in the tuning post hole then cleanly wrapped around. Maybe post some pics of the work you've done so we can see where you're at.

Does the bass have sealed tuners? If so you may have worn or broken teeth on the gears inside the tuner. It will need to be replaced. I had the exact same problem on a Peavey TL-5. Replaced it with a new Gotoh tuner. Problem solved.

This sounds like the most likely cause - or - it has a bad tuner, but I've rarely seen that - even with the Gio series unless it's been damaged previously.

Either the string is slipping, or you have a broken tuner. Stop down at the local shop.
