I need to buy a gigging amp.

If you were me, which amp would you buy?

IMO re-consider your rig

get a 410 and a decent amp

cheapest decent sound = Hartke or Carvin IMO

i own an Aguilar DB 410 powered by a Mark Bass LMII, rocks most houses (and its 300W) but your talking about a £1000

what is your budget and what size venue do you play to?

OP its the 21st Century. Consider this, someone mentioned in another thread, that The Who's amps bass/guitar in their heyday and loudest was 100w Marshall/Hiwatt heads with 8x10 stacks. Now, ask yourself is it the image of rocking out in front the Wall of Sound the thing you are going for then, get yourself; 2 4x10's, a couple 1x18 etc... But if you are just looking to stay in the mix, not bust your back, be smart not cool, then get yourself the GK MB2x12 combo 500w, 39lbs, $700 bucks and don't look back.

Remember if you go with 2x10 you'll have add a 1x15, that's why the 2x12, kept it simple sometimes is the best. If not the GK any similar rig with 2x12, 39lbs or less and 500w plus watts with DI for rock/pop/country/funk/metal its all you gonna need unless you doing stadiums:)

I'm voting Ashdown purely because I own an MAG300 and I swear by it. It sounds amazing and for what you're playing I really think it will compliment your style. That, and its relatively affordable when compared to other amps in its range.

I, for one, will definitely be upgrading to another Ashdown later on when the time comes.

So it's down to the GK MB2-500 or the Carvin BX500

I'm kind of GASsing for the Carvin, but I played through a friend's GK (an older something or other) and it was pretty darn nice.

And I think you all have talked me into dual 2x10's (gotta fit into the Hyundai).

Any last bits of advice before I pull the trigger?

As I'm sure you all know...YOU ROCK!

Thanks so very much for the input.

In the interest of saving a little so I can afford TWO 2x10s (which is how I'm gonna go, I think, but I'm gonna try out some 2x12s to be sure) I have pulled the trigger on a used MB2-500 from a fellow TBer.

Life, as they say, is good.

Your brother of the lower register,

So, of course you all know my next question...

Cab suggestions!!!

I used to have a Carvin 2x10 but it was a little...erm...fwappy?

I don't have tons of $$$ to go for the high-end boutiquey kind of stuff so I'm looking for a workhorse brand that will hold up to weekly rehearsals and gigging.

I've often read that of any place in the chain, the speakers/cab is where you don't want to scrimp, so fire away.

I have a Carvin BRX2.10 and it is a great little cab. The BRX4.10 is meatier and also reasonably priced. Some of the older 210's were not as good fwih.

Avatar is a good choice for the budget conscious.

Good luck.

Cab suggestions!!!

Have you looked at Avatar?

US-made Eminence drivers in a great cabinet. I use them and there is definitely NO fwap. You're right, don't scrimp on speakers. Also, don't overpay for a cabinet. These are excellent cabinets that will take a beating, at a great price. And, no offense Marley's Ghost, but terms like "budget-concious" make it sound like you sacrifice something to save money... but many boutique and top-end cabinets makers use the same drivers as Avatar. Check it out if you haven't already.
