I need to buy a gigging amp.

If you were me, which amp would you buy?

I'm sure this is a rookie question, but if I'm gonna run two 2x10 cabs with the MB2-500, I'm gonna want them to be 8ohm cabs, right?

What wattage should the cabs be (I know that's not the 'right' way to ask, but the evening is coming to a close, as are my eyes)?

Yes both 210's need to be 8 ohm. If they handle 300 watts each you should be good. Electrical power ratings on cabs are a guide, too low of power they might fart out too fast, to high a power rating you may have to use a lot of power just to get any sound.

Thanks!

Just for curiosity's sake...what would mismatched cabs do (i.e., one 8 ohm cab and one 4 ohm cab?

Your head can only support as low as a 4 ohm load.

8 Ohm + 8 Ohm = 4 Ohm,
8 Ohm + 4 Ohm = 2 Ohm
4 Ohm + 4 Ohm = 2 Ohm

You could potentially fry your head if you paired either two four ohm cabs, or an 8 ohm with a 4 ohm.

You could always get a single Avatar 4X10 rated for 1000 Watts at 4 ohms, or two 2X10s rated for 500 watts each.

I personally went with an 8 Ohm 2X12 from Avatar and paired it with my Peavey Tour 700 head, and I love the tones I'm getting out of it. I'm using the DI on the head tomorrow to record, and I'm realy excited.

Avatar cabs are very inexpensive (NOT cheap) cabs made in the U.S.A with high quality drivers you would see in the big dollar name brands. They are great cabs, and I'd recommend them to anybody starting to play out. Everybody that asks what cab I am using when they hear my bass tone is shocked when they find out it's only a $400 cab... Best bang for your buck, IMO.
