I need to go on an EDEN rant!

I totally understand your pain wyleeboxer. I'm guessing Kevin was just as confused as you were regarding all the product spec revisions.

I didn't mean to sound unsympathetic before, I just felt compelled to defend the guy since he has been a huge help to me in the past when I needed spare parts for my amp.

I'm sorry to hear that you ended up getting screwed over by the legacy left behind by the mess that Eden became under USM. I hope the new owners (JAM industries) can return Eden to its former glory soon.

Cheers,
Duff2

I just hate spending over a GRAND $$ on something and only to find out that this big reliable company cant get something as little as this right. Not to mention the $100 I spent on the Carvin speaker!

The RS115 manual clearly states the extension cab is wired in series with the internal speaker:

"Connections With Additional Cabinets – We designed the RS series
combos to provide maximum power without the need for additional cabinets.
That’s why the impedance of the internal speakers is 4 Ohms. In order to
protect the amplifier from misuse and abuse, the extension speaker jack is
wired in series, so the amp can’t be forced to operate in an unsafe mode."

What's the problem, exactly?

The problem is that, while the rest of the RS combos are 4 ohms internally, the RS115 has an 8 ohm driver. So, given that the external speaker output is wired in series, adding an 8 ohm external speaker to the RS115 results in a 16 ohm load, and a considerable reduction in power compared to 4 ohms, if it were wired in parallel like it should be.

Right, so the speaker change doesn't negate the fact that it's still wired in series, like the manual says. Didn't anyone (OP or Eden CS) actually look at the manual?

I'm well aware that Eden copies manuals within a series; I have two of them.

I'm pointing out that this seems to me like a tempest in a teapot. Either the OP or CS could have checked this out (or had this checked out) for a lot less than the price of the extension cab.

EDIT: It'd have been as simple as plugging in a cable or empty plug to the extension jack and see whether the internal speaker turns off.

I think that the frustrating part is that Eden CS is misinformed about their own products, plus they've misinformed end users that the wiring is on the RS115 is parallel, when in fact it is series. The customer shouldn't have to be doing tech work to figure this out on their own.

The first person I spoke with at Eden was not Kevin, and one other person over there said the combo is wired parallel also, so it seems to be common knowledge at Eden that this particular combo was to be wired in parallel as it should have been.... whatever.

Let me just break it down:

$700 (combo) + $350 (cab) = $1050 + tax for a 100watt 2x15 made in china with crappy speakers bass rig! I just hope the reliability holds up on the combo I still own, I'm sure the $100 Carvin speaker I put in it will...

The whole Eden CS thing is disappointing for sure. I used to use Eden and liked it...a lot. I have even been tempted to go back. The WTX head and 112 is a good sounding, light little rig. The CS thing worries me, the 1/4" only input on the cab seems weird, and GB has been so good to me in the mean time, but I also know I need something. Little different than what I have now.

True story:
I bought the eden 800 head a while back I'm not sure what model it was. I just know it was an amp with 800 watts. I was all stoked coming from Guitar Center and going staight to my big band gig in the park. About two songs into the 1st set the trombone player said "Wow your speakers are on fire". I blushed at what I thought was a complement but no he meant that my speakers really were on fire. My 10 cab was destroyed. I took the amp back and Eden ended up replacing my 10 cab and fixing the amp I had bought. Something about a "reverse polarity" is what he said went wrong with my amp. What I did wrong here is not also demanding that I get a new amp and not a fixed one. I never liked that amp.

. . . I bought a Nemesis RS115 combo 4 years ago, paid around $700. I wasn't sure if the speaker extension jack was wired in series. . .

As a satisfied former Nemesis combo user, I am very sorry to hear of your frustrating experience. For years, I gigged an older Nemesis 2x12 that was an amazing combo. When I needed more volume, I thought I'd add an extension cab. I found a ton of info on the Eden website, where they continue to publish manuals of their discontinued products, including the RS series combos: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

. . .This manual will cover. . . the RSC210, RSC410, RSC212 and RSC115. The RS Series is powered by the RS320 amplifier which delivers 200 watts RMS output @ 8 Ohms and 320 watts @ 4 Ohms. . .

There, I found that the 2x12 combo impedance was already 4 Ohms, and that adding an extension would cut power and result in 8 Ohm impedance.

We designed the RS series combos to provide maximum power without the need for additional cabinets. That’s why the impedance of the internal speakers is 4 Ohms. In order to protect the amplifier from misuse and abuse, the extension speaker jack is wired in series, so the amp can’t be forced to operate in an unsafe mode.

After reading this, I decided to sell my combo to buy some Eden standalone stuff, providing the needed flexibility, tone, volume, and headroom. I continue to use it to this day, without issue.

Your issue is different from mine, however. You state that you found your single speaker to be 8 Ohms. In this case, I would have probably bought an 8-Ohm extension, and wired the extension jack in parallel.

. . . By running the "recommended" 8ohm N115RS ext. cabinet together with the 8ohm combo that gives you a total of 16ohm in series and not 4ohm in parallel . . .

Yes, you are exactly right.

What this means to the user is that, when you connect an additional cabinet to your RS combo, you will not get quite as much power to the speakers. However, because of the added speaker surface area, you will still notice an increase in volume – just not quite as much as you might expect.

Also, keep in mind that simply adding amplifier power will not necessarily increase your volume significantly. The addition of more speakers will usually have more impact on your overall volume level and improve your overall presence and tone.

So much for the info found in the manual. For info on discontinued Eden products, outside of the manuals, I would ask my questions on the Eden forum: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

There are many Edenites that are happy to answer questions, as well as offer contact info for applicable, Eden-specific customer service reps. US Music covers a wide product line, that also includes Warwick: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I have been fortunate to have excellent customer service from Eden, in the few times that I have needed it over a time frame of many years. However, I am sorry that you have not found the same quality experience.

Peace!

i don't get this.. you're complaining about an amp you bought FOUR years ago?? and you just recently bothered to inquire about the extension speaker jack's wiring scheme??

then when the CS rep is vague, or misquotes what is already printed in the owner's manual, you get upset that he does not repeat what is already printed.. on a four year old product..

did you purchase this combo, new?? or used?? if it's used, someone could have swapped speakers prior to you buying it.. if it was new, then are *all* the RS115 combos equipped with 8 Ohm - 250W speakers??

if so, then you should contact Eden and request a replacement 4 Ohm speaker.. because that is *not* what you had purchased.. it was not advertised that way, and it states in the manual that it's 4 Ohms..

i have a Nemesis NC-212 combo, and i've had no problems with it at all.. and when i bought it, i fully understood the extension speaker jack as being wired in series.. which is not a big deal, since i specifically bought this amp as a combo.. sans extension cabs..

No mine came new with a 8ohm 250 watt speaker as well, new. Factory sealed.
