I need... wardrobe advice

I would be more into playing the tunes. Nobody’s gonna care how you dress.
I mean, there are cases you are right, but our band is a product which includes our presentation. If I show up looking like an amateur I wont be getting my chunk of the $5k wedding cut because no one will choose us to play their wedding.

But for the sake of argument, let's just say I play better when I look good.

How many different times will this question be posted?? TB for fashion advice? :D:laugh:;):roflmao::smug::woot: Find the look that’s appropriate for the music genre you’re playing… if you read through the ‘advice’ it ranges from camo to 80s jackets to camping/fishing attire. Maybe one of those work? :roflmao:

Kind of subjective the whole idea of rockstar vibe.

If your T-shirt is bothering you, invest in a quality t-shirt yes those exist, they are meant for suit wear or layering spring pieces and summer time. Uniqlo Airsm T-Shirt is a good start, while I hate the idea of spending 14 dollars on a T-shirt the quality is way better than a plain hanes. Of course this t-shirt is meant for layering.

A sports jacket or blazer can look nice. Some can look preppy a bit. Not much of a rockstar vibe to me at least BUT what I wore before is pattern pants, a houndstooth pattern with a plain t-shirt on hot summer days, I also own lots of linen and wide leg pants that works well in all weather types, layering is key.

So why not try this, pattern bowling shirt or pattern floral shirt, even Hawaiian. Tuck it in with some kind of pattern pants or dress pants. It can be plain, bold it is up to you, I find grey wool like pleated pants looks the best tucked in with pattern shirts, and even white pants of all kinds of patterns and material can look great, not much of a fan of white jeans but some people swear by them.

Also maybe a bold pattern cardigan can be good for you. You can get a v neck or lined type one for your neck and it goes around your t-shirt, that style is very good. Tuck in your shirt, black pants IMO look best with a t-shirt, graphic tees are awesome with this and a cardigan over it. Fits very well and is a common style for me when I am lazy, I sometimes tuck in my cardigan that is a tad bit on the streetwear side of things though and I have plain cardigans to silly ones. Up to you and a cardigan can look great with a pattern button shirt.

If you like suit wear, this may sound out there but wearing a suit with a Hawaiian shirt can look awesome IMO.

Anyway I am huge fan of fashion, and some of its guidelines (No rules in fashion just guidelines :) ) If you could share ideas of outfit preferences it can help. I enjoy a youtuber name Parker York Smith who does lots of fashion for all. Also pinterest and Instagram can help inspire me and others.

Good luck :)

I need advice as well. I’m tired of dressing like a waiter. The last gig I played somebody asked me to fill her water glass…..

So a big key to avoiding the waiter look is getting rid of the tie if you wear one and avoiding all black. I am not sure how you are dressing and what the dress codes are, I personally wear almost only and always turtlenecks with my suit type wear when I am allowed. With a suit full on tucking in type of turtleneck, H&M has some great ones. Even changing up the button up shirt and its style, maybe from French collar to Oxford can help. Patterns can also help or maybe more bold colors (Yellow, Pink, etc. it is subjective to each person.) Also swapping your buttons with patterns and stripes can help also.

You can never go wrong. I’ve got a broke-ish filmmaker/muscian friend in Brooklyn whose entire personality is built around his $800 hand made Italian zippered black boots.

Haha, always get people asking about my topcoat jacket saying it looks like a 300 dollar jacket. Nope it's a topcoat from Gap factory and it was on sale for 45 Dollars Wooo! Many fashion advice and fashionistas like myself say, if you aren't working for a company of any kind cheap can be best, thrift stores and second hands are key as well! If it looks good it looks good!

Back in the 80s, I wore spandex and leather vests ("Biker jackets with the sleeves cut off; à la Rob Halford). Sometimes, I wore Spandex "tails".

Both of my instruments were black with white pick guards and I went a bit extreme. If I wore white sneakers, I went with black spandex pants, white spandex shirt, black vest. If I started with the black sneakers ... well, you get the point.

I did have a few suede cut-off shirts with leather and stud shoulder pieces. They followed the same "color" scheme.

Most recently, it always depended upon the gig. I wore jeans and T-shirts. I wore jeans and polo shirts. I wore tuxedo shirts (when the situation called for it) and slacks ...

Back in the 80s, it was all about our band's "image". As I got older, it became about being aware of the gig and wanting to impress the bar owner/whoever was paying the freight.

I like to think I dressed appropriately to the gig.

Here's a few

Why not tried to style that last one?
I like it a lot, find some kind of pattern dress shirt or collar shirt.
Mens Warehouse sells loads of pattern designs for sale from Paisley and Grey
Also go on Poshmark (Ebay for clothes basically) and look up pattern dress shirt choose your size and see what people are selling!
Any pants would go great, if you want to keep it safe, for sure plain color suit pants or jeans like a grey and black maybe. I prefer tucked in but I guess a rockstar vibe would be untucked and maybe first few buttons unbutton.
Get some really well fitted pants I even say getting them tailor to be ankle legs but that is completely up to you!

Also a bomber or leather jacket (I think brown would add to old school classic rock feel the best!) or even a basic leather black (can be fake or real, lots of great mimic choices from all fast fashion but it can be a great investment!) those jackets can be great layering for when it gets cold and if you don't mind wearing anything underneath, a layering warm winter piece can help that people use for hiking and stuff, I wear those all the time!

Boots also can look great, I love and think Chelsea boots would fit or military ankle boots. Zappos can help find you a pair you may like, even loafers or Oxford would look awesome IMO! If you wanna go Ska though can't go wrong with vans!

Good luck!

It’d be cool if there was a Blazer/Sport/Travel jacket thread. I’ve got a few Men’s Warehouse & Kohl’s jackets that’re okay, but also a pair of Circolo’s that utterly blow them away.

It might already exist, but yes a fashion thread/club would be very awesome and fun. I am a huge fashion fan so would love to share some fits and such on there!

FWIW, i always insisted that any ensembles I directed dress uniformly and conservatively, as the idea was to present a unified cohesive performance to the audience without visual distractions from the aural performance. I told the players, "If you want to stand out, do so by demonstrating exemplary musicianship. It doesn't take any talent or ability to dress outrageously."

KISS would disagree. It’s called “entertainment”

+1.

The Airism shirts may not be the cheapest around, but dang are they comfy and have a decent cut. Especially the white Tees are great because the fabric is so thick, look high class and not somewhat see-through like most others.

Tux from Goodwill. Shirt from TJ Maxx. God knows where the tie came from, but probably Goodwill. And I pretty much wear a hat all the time, anyway.

I think what you wear depends on who you want to be on stage. The rest of the band wears black jeans, black-t-shirts and they don't move around a lot. I can't stand still when I play and decided to embrace being the odd guy on stage.

When you've practiced and rehearsed and know the music, the next question is how do you choose to present that. A friend wears Hawai'i styled shirts and

Crocs with big googly eyes. Flea wears his skin.

UBU.

Yeah, the Uriah Heep guy has a timeless "rock star" look. The skeleton hand strap is a little tacky (I think a solid colored strap would be better and would pair that skeleton hand strap with a solid shirt so the eye is on that cool strap and not distracted by the shirt stars), but it's all good.

And it brings up another "fashion" point. The color and style of your strap should not clash with your shirts. That's another reason I like solids for shirts I'd wear on stage. If you have a cool strap (like, say, a yellow one that has CAUTION written all over it like caution tape), you definitely want a dark color top so the strap stands out as a cool accessory.

Fashion and stage attire require proper respect and consideration. If you are a stage performer, the look is very important. When all eyes are on you, you don't want to look like a schlub. And you also want a good look so that when people briefly look up from their phones, they'll look a little longer because you're fashionable.

And, again, it doesn't have to be complicated. Casual trousers (jeans, khakis, etc.), solid colored top untucked, and clean shoes that all fit properly. And make sure your hair's not greasy. Or if you're fully bald, a fresh head shave. Sartorial choices don't have to be fancy and fussy. Simple, but with a little thought put into it, always works.
