Today I announced my retirement after 38 years in the geotechnical engineering business, 23 years with my current company. I'm going to miss all the great people there, and it's a bit of an emotional strain, but I'm going to take a couple months off, then find a new career, probably in education.

It's a very strange feeling, because I'll be unemployed and looking for a job for the first time in 38 years. I don't have to worry about money, so I have time to look around for something just right for me. I already have a couple offers, but not exactly what I'm looking for. We'll see what happens when it hits the street.

I've received some very nice e-mails from employees after the announcement, and it makes me feel that I helped some people along with their careers. It's been a tough job, but the relationships make it all worthwhile.

This will be fun. That is all.

Congrats Mike, and best of luck in your future endeavors. I pray that anger has not clouded your judgment in any way you have given this plenty of thought. You are so lucky to be able to make this kind of movement at this juncture in your career. My best to You!

No anger either way. This has been in the works for over a year, but the economy made it seem unlikely until I struck a mutually beneficial deal with the other shareholders. I love this company, and they will keep an office for me in the building for the foreseeable future. It's cool all the way around.

BTW, the reason I had to wait 'til today is that I had to get final approval from the Board of Directors (which I chair) for the deal before I could announce it to the company. Our Board meeting was today. I didn't want to post it here before the rest of the company knew.
