I QUIT!

Damn, what an unprofessional jerk (the bandleader). How can he keep bands together when he treats everyone so poorly? I'm amazed that you stayed in that situation for more than a single gig.

...

Seems every time you see their bands, there's some member change, but somehow they continue on. Of course their quality always suffers as a result.

It’s still sad how much many musicians will endure just to be in a band.

I'll go against the grain here and say that you probably wasted your time and the email could be "used against " you in some way later.

No matter how justified you are about a particular thing, the moment you blow off steam in an email or text you've put yourself in a vulnerable position professionally.

You asked.

It's a lesson that I had to learn the hard way once upon a time.

Just my two cents.

I agree it was probably a waste of time, but since it’s already done…

If anyone showed me that email trying to make the OP look bad, I’d still sympathize with the OP, and at least with the long version, the BL can’t misrepresent the reason the OP quit.

The BL would have to be delusional (which he might be) to share that email, as in any context, it would make him look bad.

I think anybody with band experience can understand the mindset of the OP at the time of the writing, and overlook the excess rant.

Jmo… :)

Can you post the response?

+1 :ninja:

Normally, I'd say to be professional and just say you are resigning from your position and to call you if further details are needed. However, if the BL was as big of a douche as the email suggests, I can definitely see wanting to vent.

Sadly, as others have stated, this will be lost on the BL. It always is, even after they've burned through all of the good players around and their bands are made up of hacks who are only playing with the BL because they couldn't get a gig anywhere else.

As I read your post I thought of a couple of people I have known in my life that were really similar to "your guy" and how much energy I wasted trying to make it work with them.
You did the right thing. Good for you. There are lots of really great musicians out there to play with and there is no way to justify putting up with someone like that. His attitude and venom will be his own undoing.
Chalk it up as a great opportunity to have learned and a whole bunch of "dues paid".
All the best brother!

It sounds just like my previous gig! I was fourth of seven bass players! My current band is made up of ex-members of said band. Now we help, support and challenge each other to be as good as we can be - "hang your ego on the hatstand before you enter here". Best out of it, well done.

Actually, in hindsight, I agree with many of you who said I should've stopped after the "I quit".

He did respond with expletives and revisionist history -

I also received responses from many fellow musicians who used to play with him and some who still do...

Here's a couple...

"I hear ya Paul. If I hear of anything I will drop your name for sure. You are a great player and person. You don't deserve his ****." - from a drummer (imagine that!)

"I always knew you were a well meaning and nice guy. However, after reading your "I Quit" email", in my eyes you have now been elevated to hero status. Please contact me in the future if there is any opportunity for us to peacefully coexist in a professional work environment."

However - probably just should've given my two weeks and left.

Thanks, all, for your input.

And yes, Joe Nerve, he did talk sh*t about you. Sorry.
