It sounds to me like you will always wonder about the "other" bass that you didn't choose, so I say just get either one now based on gut feeling, and then save up for the other one. You can't really go wrong with either style. They are both very versatile in their own way.
I preferred J's for years; I prefer P's now. I am sure I will change back to J's at some point in the future. It's good to have both if you can afford it.
