I saw Cheap Trick tonight (8/4/2024)

That is so cool! I saw them when I was a teen in Virginia around 1999-2001? Memory is... hazy. But I remember being blown away with how much energy they had for a bunch of old farts. Now 2.5 decades later still going?!

I seen them right about the time "In Color" came out.(1978ish?)
Rick played his 7 neck monster, amazing.
But I was especially taken with a guitar that he used on "Day Tripper". It had a graphic of all four fabs on the front, and at the end of the song, while the final chord rang out, he would flip it over and hold it over his head, exposing a large "The Beatles " logo on the back.
Well... you might say I was inspired.

Ive played Day Tripper many times since. And I always flip it over at the end.

Lived close to Rockford in their early days and saw them live back then. It doesn’t get any better, only different!

I saw them a few years ago, loved it. Great, great show. Rick Nielsen switched guitars for every song, and once DURING a song. Highlight was Tom Petersson catching me playing air bass with him on I Want You To Want Me (we were in the front row - my friends wife picked the seats and she's a HUGE Peter Frampton fan, who they were touring with) and giving me a wink.

It just doesn't sound the same without Bun!

Used to love watching them just to watch Bun E Carlos on drums. A bit sad the way that ended. He was/is a phenomenon.

Love Tom! and the rest, but it just doesn't "swing" without Bun!

He still is a phenom! Just saw him last week.

The thing about Cheap Trick is we (in the US) think they're a "somewhat successful" band. The truth is they are a lot more successful than we think, but their success is mostly overseas, so we don't notice it.

My wife and I saw Cheap Trick shortly after we moved to Denver in 2001. They played outdoors in Civic Center park to 10,000 people. It was one hell of a show.

I really like some of Cheap Trick's songs and Rick Nielsen is an outstanding guitarist. I really miss Bun E. Carlos!

Never cared much for the sound of the "multi string" basses. Very muddy sounding.

I haven't seen them in a long time. Back in the day when I went to lots of concerts I think I saw them 10 or 11 times, not sure which have lost many of the ticket stubs. Love that band, some great tunes. Great you got to see them.

This is my all time favorite CT track. Saw them many times in the late 70s but they never performed it (videos at YT show them playing it at concerts much later). The title comes from the mandocello that Rick plays in the intro. The bass is purportedly a T-Bird.



P.S. I’m sure the mandocello was an ancient Gibson on the record. The live videos from the 90s and later show Rick using an Ovation mandocello which they made only for a few years. A mandocello is tuned like a cello…C G D A low to high and with doubled strings. That’s why it sounds like a really low-tuned 12 string guitar.

Live at Budokan was originally a Japan-only release that the band put out on their own dime because they were getting an almost Beatlemania level of success there, and were not having nearly as much luck in the States, so they wanted to do something special for their Japanese fans.
