If you play it back through your ear pods you can move the tiniest bit of air. And you can get your SO to pat your back to the beat so it feels exactly like standing in front of your rig. It's the only way to go.

After my discharge from the Navy I traveled around the country for a year then settled in Southern CA for starters. I’ve played with an amp for a long time but always felt meh, it was just so I would be heard live.

Then I played direct, meaning that I had a sound card and just plugged direct and played with iTune or recorded.

Then I used a Darkglass preamp the Vintage micro tube ultra. Very well made but still I still prefer my tone direct.

my bass as an active circuit, I boost mid and treble and favour the bridge pickup and voila it sounds fine to me.

I just feel weird

You're not weird. I have at least one bass where, for our headphone rehearsals, I prefer its tone straight into the DI box. Most of the time I use minimal pedalboard processing, then straight into the board and out to my in ear monitors. I'll use an amp if I need to but I really like my IEM tone.

The one thing I do miss is that feeling of my amp kicking me in the back when I get close to it. I think I need one of those BackBeat bass thumpers, but I haven't wanted it enough to go chase one down.

I also keep coming back to my clean tone through my Roland Quad sound card and Prosonus 8" studio monitors.

I like practising through them and knowing when I practice that's the sound of me and my bass. When I'm really enjoying playing and the tone it just makes me happier about either of my basses.

My preference for any situation is to go direct. My amp is merely a method of hearing myself on stage; I prefer as neutral a tone as possible.

Strapping oneself to a giant rig and riding the lightening is occasionally a lot of fun. When I have real work to do for highly discriminating people paying me to fit into the song or group effort quickly I plug into a Kemper then go into the board. Faster, cheaper, more reliable, and ultimately, quite satisfying and better sounding both in the house and on stage. (Recording is frequently a bit different though.) I don't find your situation weird at all.

Running bass direct isn't weird. Hauling hundreds of pounds of amplification that floods the stage and venue with uncontrollable bass reflections when the sound guy only runs DI FOH anyway is weird.

I don't see the problem - I've had one bass in particular that sounded worse the more you put in between it and the recorder's input.

I am the opposite.

I do a lot of recording, and always much more than than live playing for years now. I have OK DI's, pres with DI's, compressors (bass DI'd through a 163X or an 1176 can sound awesome) ...

Don't matter, I'd much rather mic an amp (usually a Ampeg B108 with a SM7B split into a The Brick/160XT and a Meek VC3Q).

Now, I do use a lot of pedals, and the amp tends to to tame 'em in a good way (particularly stuff like octaves and filters but also dirt), but also just the occasional un-effected bass.
