If you want to match a guitar you need no less than twice the speaker complement he has. In this case, eight twelves or four fifteens. No guitar player needs more than one twelve to be as loud as any sane person needs to be, but 'sane' and 'guitar player' very often are contradictory terms. We practice this loud to keep up with my guitarist 4X12 with a JCM800 head. That thing is ridic loud. He has the master on 1 and it is painfully loud.
Perhaps, but pushed hard almost any amp can generate four times its rated power in peak bursts of sufficient duration to blow a driver. It seems to me that a 15 inch speaker should be able to handle 112.5 watts pretty easily (half of the amps power).
