I think I broke my toe today...

This morning I was running up the stairs barefoot and my index toe on my left foot curled under somehow, bearing my full weight as I ran - ouch! It felt like I stubbed it real bad, but nothing extreme.

A couple of hours later, the top third of the toe (up to the first knuckle) was purple, but didn't feel too much worse.

A few hours after that while doing some yard work, my toe started throbbing. When I finished, I took my shoe off, and the top third of my toe is now almost black (btw, I'm white). The entire toe is now swollen, and the top third is the size of a shooter marble.

I'm not sure if I can do anything about it other than ice it down. I have a doctor appointment Tuesday morning, so I'll ask Dr. Wilson what he thinks. I dread stuffing my foot into a dress shoe for work tomorrow.

Does this sound like a broken toe? Has anyone here ever broken a toe?

Go to the doctor and have an x-ray taken. It's cheap to do and you'll be able to see exactly what damage has been done. If it is broken, pretty much the only treatment is to tape it to the next toes to keep it from moving while it heals, but you don't want it to heal crooked.

i stubbed my toe ages ago and my little to has never been the same again. also a giant fat guy fell on me and i ahve this permenant didnt in the flesh just above my enlbo its just like a skin on not of bone its wierd but doesnt affect me in any bad way.

on a side note every single job ive had ive had something bad happen to my foot. its been run over buy a forklift truck whith surpringly didnt fracture anything. ive also had a nail all the way through and it didnt hurt for an entire day, it was actually pretty cool looking when it didnt hurt because it was all bloody and holy. but it hurt when i was back at work the next day. in my current job ive yet to have anything happen to my feet. well apart from my heel being cut apart by uncomfortable shoes.

I think you DID break your toe. You've described it very well in great detail. I've a bad habit of breaking toes, and have had the mis-pleasure of breaking 4 so far. Stairs have broken 2.. a cement 'stop' in the back of parking space broke a big toe, and the 4th was stepping down too hard without shoes. The only thing I did with all of them was elevate the foot for 2 days.. on and off. Broken toe bones heal rather quickly .. The only fun I got out of any of them was some worker's comp for the broken big toe.. plus the nail went all black (as well as half the foot!) So I got to drill a little 'vent' hole on top of the blackened nail.. boy did that dead blood spurt out nicely! After that, I removed the nail almost to the root.
