I think I bruised my thumb pad???

This last month has been great for my bass playing. I have a new bass I can't put down, and have had the opportunity to jam with some stellar musicians. I have been consistently practicing and learning new theory, sometimes for 45 minutes to an hour at a time. Unfortunately, I have developed some pain on my thumb pad. It's super tender now when pressure is applied, and it's hard to not apply pressure, because I have to use it so much. Pretty much any time I grip or pinch with my thumb it's a yowwwch! I never had it before but the new bass is a sterling, and I was resting my plucking hand thumb on the corner of the humbucker at first because it felt good there. I'm thinking that's what might have started it. Wondering if y'all have experienced this? Any thoughts out there Dr. Funkensteins?
