Yew! When I bought my USA Cirrus5 I’m pretty sure the GC thought it was one of the imports. I got it a good $300 below market ($800 w/ case+candy).

Guitar Center makes these sort of mistakes all the time but its not usually this egregious. I’ve also seen it the other way, where they mislabel a cheaper bass as its more expensive version.

You can thank employees that know little about bass brands and manufacturers that create nearly identical looking versions of the same bass for vastly different sums.

Someone with a good eye and a bit of time on their hands could turn a profit poaching from GC.

Went into GC Hollywood Saturday and they had a Lakland they labeled a 44-02 for $999.99. I played it, sound good, played killer, but I think it is a 44-94. Made in the United States on the back of the headstock, 687 stamped on the top side of the headstock (reads a 2005 to me), no Skyline Series on the front of the headstock.

I passed on it in the store, but this morning it was eating at me that it was mislabeled. Did some research and purchased it, should be here tomorrow. I have never owned a Lakland, but I think I made out.

Lakland owners/fans, did I misidentify this as a 44-94?

This can work in both directions. I was at a GC a couple of weeks ago and they had a used Skyline 55-01 priced at $2200. I pointed the overpricing out to them and the guy said it was obviously a mistake. He put it behind the counter. Came back the next day and it was back on the wall priced at $2200.

100% I played it in store over the weekend, and it was exactly as the photos in the ad showed. I am hoping that is what actually shows up today.

Congrats! Hundreds of GCs make mistakes like that all the time. But for that “flagship” store to miss something like that is unusual. Imagine how little they gave the prior owner for it.

As other have said, I feel a bit of sadness for whomever traded/sold this and what they got for it.

It arrived, and it is a 44-94 as suspected. I reached out to Lakland directly and they confirmed the details, and that it was shipped to Mesa Boogie in Hollywood in 2005 (the Mesa Boogie store used to be right across Sunset Blvd from Guitar Center). Case still had the original paperwork in it, along with a spare bridge saddle and the back control cover still has the plastic on it.
