Yeah, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Hammond, and New Orleans are all really good markets for us. It'll be nice to see the Shinedown boys again, we toured with them this past summer for about 6-7 weeks. Great guys, and they put on a killer show.

Yeah, their original bassist, Kevin, played a 5 string Thumb NT.......I often get confused for him. We both have dark hair, tall, skinny....and play 'wicks. lol
Rockstars get everything. I'm just kidding. That looks like a sweet bass and an awesome gf. I've been fortunate enough to have a wife who is addicted to shoes and purses, so she doesn't really bat an eye at my GAS.

I am wayyyy far from a rockstar. lol. This is the first time I've ever been given a piece of gear, all my other gear I've paid for myself. I got my Mesa endorsment AFTER i got my cab, which I paid full price for. lol.
How I got with them, uhm....friend of a friend at first, but I took it upon myself to say something.....just a shot in the dark...
The girl I was dating at the time used to do merch for the band Submersed. Justin, the rythm guitarist for 12 Stones used to play for a band called Breaking Point. Both Submersed and Breaking Point were signed to Wind-up and toured together a few times....So my g/f knew justin from that. Fast forward a few years, Breaking Point broke up, Submersed broke up, Justin went on to join 12 Stones.
So, summer of 2007, 12 Stones started touring in july to start supporting the new album coming out in August. They were coming thru the area, playing a summer festival and my g/f said she wanted to go and see Justin since she hadn't in a while, so she got ahold of him and we went. Hangin out after the show, havin a few drinks, me and justin we to go get refills and that's when I just said.."Hey man, I just quit my band of like 3 years and I don't wanna do local gigs anymore....you're on the road, you have alot more contacts than I do, if you hear anything I'd appreciate it if you gave me a call"...He said cool and that he'd keep it in mind.
Now, Like I said, It was just a shot in the dark and I figured the guy would forget about it the next morning. Well, an hour later...him and the lead guitarist come to me and say it's weird that I asked because they were very unhappy with their current touring bassist. I almost pee'd myself right there. So we exchaged phone numbers and e-mails, I sent them some recordings of songs I had written and played on and an amature music video from my last band, so they could see how I performed. They sent me their set list, I sat down and started learning everything, and 2 months later I got the call. A big fight had gone down and they had fired the guy and wanted to know if I was still interested.
Said yes, packed my things, jumped in my moms truck with my gear, her, and my g/f...drove 11 hours over night down to kKnoxville,Tn. Got there About 7am, unloaded my stuff, took a quick shower at the hotel, got on the bus and went to bed. Woke up about 10:30, sat in the front lounge with Justin and his acoustic, me and my practice amp, and the cd on the stereo....went over the riffs to make sure I had everything right. We were supposed to get a soundcheck that day, didn't..(Flyleaf was headlining and took a little more time than planned...lol). So the first time we all ever played together was the first song of the set, at a co-headlining show with Flyleaf, like 2,000 people. Been with them ever since.
There's alot more details obviously, but that's the gist of it.

am I the only one who'd be pissed my gf would buy me this. I mean she used her STUDENT loan for this! She needs it in order to study, no?

Well, I'm in college personally and depending on your classification (freshman-senior) you can take out varying levels of money (up to $9000 a year in federal loans near the end). So really if she can pay her tuition, books, etc... the rest is just as if she qualified for a really good personal loan which may or may not accrue interest while in school and doesn't need to be paid back until after. Kudos to her for investing in his future.
We have really good opportunities while in college (even while being poor). So as long as you know what you're getting into it's fine, after all you do have to pay it back eventually. A student loan is how I'm about to pay for a Thumb bass. If I didn't have a good job doing IT work then I would need the money more.

My wife recently bought me an Ibanez SR505 for a combo bday/Christmas present. I had GASsed on it at the shop when we went in to get strings for son's guitar, and she made a deal while he and I checked stuff out.
We are lucky, my friend. Spouses/SOs like ours are few and far between.

Shawn - That's an awesome story. Half of the fight is just putting yourself out there. I have a running list in my mind of the opportunities that I wish I had jumped on, just to remind myself that I have exert myself more. That being said, I'm still in a really good place with my band, but I always love to collaborate and a lot of that goes by the way side.
It wasn't just her student loan, and it wasn't part of the loan itself. It was the refund. Basically, she paid them too much for tuition and got a credit of x amount of dollars left over. And it was her tax return. Her tax person found a loop hole of sorts and got her more money than she expected. And with that, went and refiled last years for the same. So she was expecting x amount of money back, and got almost 10x's the amount back. I'm not gonna go into details, but it was very justified. I'll also add that she's done quite a bit of shopping for herself as well, so it's not like she took everything she had and spent it on me.
She knows I appreciate it and she knows I appreciate her more, bass or not. We just have a great relationship and we equally make each other happy.
