I think I've invented a cure for titannus?

Had a thought, I would hate to end up with tinnitus but this may solve something?

How about a device you shove in your ear(s) that creates a sine wave which is 180* out of phase with the screeching that you hear when you suffer from it?

That might cancel it out, but I'm not sure.

Thoughts?
 
That's an interesting idea! The only problems I can think of are these:

Could it potentially be a problem matching the pitch of the tinnitus to the device in question? It seems like from what I've been told that tinnitus does seem to stay at the same pitch, but if it varies ever so slightly (or by quite a bit) there maybe could be a way to even manually adjust the pitch by the user.

The other thing is would this approach work in relation to how tinnitus actually works? As in, by piping this out-of-phase pitch into the eardrum it might not 'trick' something like tinnitus (which resides in the head's nervous system) into disappearing into the head.

I nearly got to do a module in the physics of hearing on my degree - this makes me wish again I had :)

I have tinnitus. 10 years now, due mostly to too loud %^&*(% guitars.
It totally sucks. In my quest to get some help I have found that the ringing in
my ears is close to 8K frequency. Hearing aids help by lessening the perception of the ringing. I have suggested to Miracle Ear the idea you have mentioned to have a masking frequency but they did not have much to say.
Best noise reduction for me is the sound of waves at the beach.
Note!! TAKE CARE OF YOUR EARS, living with tinnitus is a nightmare everyday and it does not go away. The young guys laugh it off but someday they will be miserable like me.
 
I believe tinnitus is the a result of cilia in your ears bending at an awkward angle, or something along those lines. I stopped listening to headphones so often because I fear hearing issues. However, when I do... I do not care how loud my surroundings are. I do not like to raise the volume on my MP3 player to beyond necessary levels. I hate when I am on the train and someone has to be blasting (crappy) music so loud, I can hear it several feet away, over the loud train, as well as 75 people standing/sitting around me.

I say this to inform people at an early age to give their ears a break, and do not listen to music too loud!!!!!

If you find yourself hearing your music at a lower volume then you would imagine for the level you have set on your device then TURN THE MUSIC DOWN! You are not showing signs of going deaf, but your ear and brain have a natural defense mechanism against loud noises. Your brain/ear attempts to muffle this sound by blocking out or somehow preventing all the noise from entering the ear drum area. (I am not sure 100% on how this functions, I learned it in class and I did not know the right search terms for Google lol)

So, in short, lowering your music can actually allow you to hear it at a higher volume.
