also: consider building your own "custom" from the parts you like from the sources you prefer. if you're not a tinkerer yourself: hire a luthier/tech to assemble it for you. you'll spend less to get exactly what you want if you can settle for a fender-shaped-object. a "perfect" P-bass is the easiest EB on planet earth to just nail --- IME/IMO, don't overthink it!

Thin neck? interesting... I agree, but .... that narrows the playing field in an interesting way.

I have many P-basses and I’ve had many P-basses. A 1995 - 2005 MIA Fender American Standard is the perfect P-Bass. You can find them all day long for a$1000 or a little less. It’s a 1960’s neck that is the perfect P-bass neck.
My number one is… I have two number ones. A 1963 P-bass and a 1955. The 1963 feels just like the late 1990’s American Standard.

3 best p basses Ive ever played in both sound and playability are 2 squiers and a cort

Some people, myself included, don’t care for the 7.25” neck radius or 1.75” nut width on pre-CBS Fenders. I’d rather play a current Fender American Pro than a pre-CBS. I believe a Lakland USA or Mike Lull would be some of the best traditional-inspired P Basses money can buy. My current Lakland US 44-64 is the best P Bass I’ve ever played.

For me the perfect P has a chunky neck and medium action. Basses sound better with a little string height. Just ask James Jamerson and Sir. Paul.

G&L LB-100. Neck feels great, top notch bridge & tuners, killer alnico pickup, excellent build quality. Absolutely love mine!

Chopper at Alien Audio will build a passive P for you. I don't know about his 4"s, but the passive P5 he built for me was awesome.
