Lakland Skyline P with a jazz neck. I believe the Duck Dunn models all have jazz necks.
also: consider building your own "custom" from the parts you like from the sources you prefer. if you're not a tinkerer yourself: hire a luthier/tech to assemble it for you. you'll spend less to get exactly what you want if you can settle for a fender-shaped-object. a "perfect" P-bass is the easiest EB on planet earth to just nail --- IME/IMO, don't overthink it!

American Original 50s. I installed Pure Vintage 63 pups though.
seeing you liked the custom shop then go with a fender american standard, american vintage or american original p
Sadowsky, Moollon, Alleva, Lakland or fender custom shop. They’re all awesome. You need to keep trying and find the right fit.

It is a P bass. As simple as they come. I don't see the point in spending over $2k give or take.

I’ve got a Lakland Skyline Duck Dunn and A Standard US Fender P, both with jazz width necks. They are different, but not that different if you know what I mean. I’ve never played anything of step above that in perceived quality but know I wouldn’t need it.
I have both a 72 MIA and an 84 Jazz Bass special MIJ. Granted the latter is a PJ but I have it mostly on the P (has a pickup selector). Hottest P pickup I have come across. Has a P body and a Jazz neck. Neck is tiger striped or is it flame maple. Truss rod adjustment on the headstock and has micro tilt on the heel plate. The TBX in effect is tone bypass at full counter clockwise. And it is also lighter than all my other 4 strings. Check them out if buying used

When I was stuck in the 101 in LA while on the fast lane with no hope of getting off, the highway was basically a parking lot. I also wanna P and I had to go in my water bottle instead. Just in case this is what you mean.

If you go Fender I suggest a 70s reissue CIJ, this is the best Fender Pbass I’ve ever owned and still do, and then there’s the Laklands, these are my Babies and I rotate them on gigs!!
This. Never understood the desire to drop crazy money on the simplest of passive electronic basses. Unless you want crazy rare wood tops, etc. Just my opinion.
I've played many, including an original 57. You can only do some much with a body, neck, split coil, tone, and volume.
Order a G&L LB-100 with the neck profile you prefer! That's what I did and couldn't be happier. I went for 1.5" at the nut with a 12" radius. Sounds like a P-bass and plays like a dream.
