I want a good live sound

Hey there guys,
I'm having a little trouble getting the sound I want from my setup. While it may seem a little mismatched to some folks; I know that I like it but it just needs a little help.

Here's what I'm running..

Spector 5 Rebop (EMG-HZ's) --I suspect that the pickups are the problem sometimes.

BBE Opto Comp compression pedal (I honestly, don't feel this thing doing anything anymore)

Ampeg SVT-CL (I'm still surprised that I bought an Ampeg)
SWR Goliath Senior 6x10

I have great technique and have almost always just gotten my sound from my fingers but now I really want to tailor a nice sound that I can identify with my band. I still run the amp mostly flat.

I just feel as if the eq on my Ampeg is not so extensive, thus there are frequncies that I cannot tune. I like low mid and mid. No clanky highs!!

Don't be afraid to play with the EQ a little; even though drastic cuts/boosts are rarely a good thing, it's there on your amp for a reason! I would try a cut at position '4' of your mids, and a small cut to the bass as well. Leave both switches disengaged.

You can also have a lot of control from your bass as well; maybe try soloing the neck pickup? I'd leave the EQ flat.

As a rule, ultra-lows are bad for live; they just add mud. Even though you dont like the clanky high mids/treble, they often help you to cut through, especially when playing metal.

I don't think the problem is the pickups. I have a Euro Rebop that sounds great. I also run an Ampeg but mine is an SVT 6 Pro through two SVT410HE cabs. If you do not have the owner's manual for the head, go to Ampeg's website and download it. Try some of their suggested settings and see what comes closest to what you like. Then you can gradually tweak it until you find what you want. You might want to try a different brand of strings. I use DR Marcus Miller fat beams.

Thank you very much guys. I've always tried to be a mids guy but maybe I just need to ease them back a little.

I just don't understand how my old Warwick Jazzman sounded so much lower and tighter with only one pickup (in the bridge).
