I dont care what sort of prententious aura you would want to have by having a synthetically created hairstyle (for our genetic makeup atleast) and more over, unless you guys have been here, you cant imagine the amount of dust/pollution/muck/dirt and just general rubbish we are exposed to in day-to-day life. When some of us end up in the United states or UK or something, we actually get a high from looking at our face at the end of the day and realizing they arent as black as coal or looking at the underside of our shoes and realizing you did not step on cow poop on the way home.

Dreadlocks are a SUPER bad idea here. I can understand braids or cornrows, because your hair sticks to your head. I've seen a rock guitarist with dreadlocks and I **** you not, he was the laughing stock of the human society. No one wanted to be near him, seen with him and the general consesus was that when he took off his rastafarian beanie(??) to let his locks fall, people(including me...I'll admit that) wouldnt have been surprised if there were flies flying out of his hair.

I know if you want to show off the world like you really dont give a **** about what people think of you, but it is a bad decision and it is according to me the most pretentious thing you can do to show off your non-comformism. Get a tatoo/piercing and whatever else trash you want to get but please dont end up ruining your social/professional/personal life over something like this.

People here (and I'm sure a lot of people even over there) are conservative and judgemental regardless of whatever you want to do to show off to the world that your unique. Being an eyesore or Johnny-McStinkshits really isnt a good way to do that....

I work as a manager for a company run by me and a cpl of friends in the software industry. I am 190+ cm tall, I have blond dreads, and I am pretty "big" (not as fat, more big like a viking), you probably can't imagine how much business we have won on tradeshows, caused by potential customers who just can't forget this huge blond viking dreadlock dude all nice dressed up but still with that "viking" look, negotiating business and being all relaxed with them. It's a new world and everything becomes what you make it, no more, no less.

My wife had dreads for over 5 years, and cut them off last Saturday. www.dreadheadhq.com has some great info for dreads, and their non-residue shampoo works really well. Now that she's cut them, what's left works well as a hand soap.

She did them by herself, and did a lot of the teasing at the beginning to get them to dread with a metal tooth comb. They worked for her, but it took me a while to get used to them. She decided to cut them off because she felt that she didn't have them for the right reason - for the look, not for any deeper reason like many of the rastafarians do. Plus, the weight of the dreads was starting to cause her neck to be in almost constant pain.

I've seen people with dreads who take care of them, and they look great. I've also seen dreads that looked extremely unkempt (to put it politely). Personally, I don't care what anyone does with their hair, it's their right to do it. But I will say that in my opinion, the "clean" or "cared-for" dreads look much better. I will admit, that the few people I've seen up close who had the "unkempt" dreads also seemed to have other personal hygiene problems which may be biasing my opinion.

To the OP - do what you want.

Fact : Living here, your hair will be dirtier than the mop used by janitor of the local biker bar.

Fact : 98% of the people around here are gonna be judgemental against you.

Now people are free to do what they want, make their own choices, make a point and all that. People can have fun. There are some differences in things in the enviorment though which you just need to wake up one morning to.

Regardless, free spirit and all that. People do what they want anyways.

I've had dreads a couple of times and when my hair grows a bit longer I think I'm going to twist them again.
No religious or personal statement or anything like that....I've just got wacky lame-ass hair and dreads are about the only long hairstyle that looks good on my head.
They are kind of a PITA sometimes tho'...

exactly, my brother has dreadlocks that go past his waist and hes a sucessful property lawyer

even myself - sometimes people are surprised to see this chick with brightly coloured hair, facial piercings and visible tattoos (on my fingers and hands even). Probly helps that im my own boss, but i can fix computers as well as anyone, and infact better than anyone else locally

a suit, tie and short hair dont make you automatically good at your job!

i think people of our generation mostly realise this
