i want dreadlocks!

I suggest if you do get dreads man, do it naturally. I Never used shampoo or conditioner, never combed my hair for about a year and a few months now. And my hair has yet to lock up fully. It's a journey man. I say go for it!

With all due respect....I have to say that paying a hairdresser do dreads is sorta not in line with the spirit of dreads. Don't get me wrong; they look great. I would prefer them to look like D.Don's as opposed to Fool's but paying to dread your hair just isn't right.

Most of the people I know with dreads (I had them for a brief moment myself) did it themselves. Some look great whereas others not so much. They are all free spirited people and maybe a little anti-establishment. Paying a hair dresser for dreads is selling out, or buying in to the establishment that they seek no part off.

Perhaps things are different on the other side of the pond.

varunkapahi: To give you some suggestions. At first people will tell you to just not wash your hair. I tried to start dreads but my scalp is very sensitive and therefore I had to get rid of them. If you can try to get a hold of peppermint castile soap (In the states we have Dr. Bronner's, but IDK what you might find in India) You can dilute the soap and use it wash your scalp. Also try to find yourself a tam or hat that will fit your dreads. I think they look great filled with dreads and it will also help conceal them while you are working on them which won't be pretty when you start out.

Good Luck.

That's, sorry for saying it, a very narrow-minded statement...

I chose to go to the hair-dresser to do it coz I have seen so many peeps completely screw their hair up trying to do it themselves, and I do care about how I look and I would never do that to myself.

And I choose not to debate "free spirited" as I know who I am and what I stand for, I don't need to justify it.

i totally understand the part about paying a hairdresser. i myself anyway am never going to pa some one the kind of money they charge for hairdo's (i havent visited a salon for 2years now :D) anyway i have no clue about where and how to find the residual free shamoos these websites were talking about and other things. none of my friends know anything about backcombing so its getting a little discouraging :hmm:
but D Don's pics have me running around again. but i still am not sure if should go for it and if yes then how exactly without the wax and everything

Fair Enough. I agree that many people do screw their hair up, but it's just hair, and it is nothing a pair of scissors and some clippers can't fix. :D

One of the other things that dreads seem to be about is patience and commitment. If you want to do them yourself and do them right the first thing you need to do is research. Then you have to prep your hair which may or may not include relieving your scalp of any sensitivities, irritations, sores, buildup, psoriasis and any other conditions.

Then you can actually get started. Mine were short lived and when I did them I started rubbing my hair with a pair of cheap wool fingerless gloves. Then I started slowly in small sections separating, twisting, rubbing etc. It is a drawn out process that really does take time and patience (hence the hat suggestion). If at first you don't succeed....try again. I didn't because my wife (GF at the time) didn't care for them...and my scalp is too sensitive.

Having a hairdresser do them may not be a one and done deal but it is quick gratification. :hiding: Again that is something that most the people I know with dreads are not interested in. Keep in mind these are mostly psuedohippie, jamband, STS9 type folks. And $200 bucks on dreads is money that can be spent on tour. They would rather have a sorta of DIY gratification.

I completely respect your decision and realize that you don't have to justify it. I will also admit that I don't know you personally and I'm not trying to jab at your character. I'm just saying that personally; I'd get more gratification out of doing dreads myself.

I will say they look great. :D

It's a lifestyle choice, buddy. Takes mroe care than regular hair, and your diet and hygiene will play a big role.

Do it if it's for you.

If it's not for you then evaluate your intentions and ideals surrounding style.
