I want to live in Chicago

Those were the days. I lived in a two bedroom basement apartment (could have easily been 3 bedrooms, it was huge) and paid $525 a month. That was 15 years ago, though.

Not sure how Rogers Park is anymore, but I still have friends that live up there. Beautiful when I was there. 35 minutes to the Loop (downtown)...

I'm in Rogers Park now. I'm paying $560 for a studio w/heat and gas. I'm liking it overall, more than when I lived in Gold Coast. Gold Coast I was paying $750 for a place smaller than this.

Taking the 147, it's normally 45-50mins door to door. I work at Symphony Center.

I love Chicago so far although I've only been here a month and a half or so and haven't been able to explore the city a whole lot. As someone who's been to NYC a million times, the cleanliness astounds me every time I go downtown.

Chicago = 1 huge road construction zone.

Traffic + noise + shoulder to shoulder, obnoxious idiots


I live less than 40 miles from Chicago but I've managed to avoid visiting that stink hole for more than 10 years.

It's a nice place to photograph from the air but I wouldn't want to live there.

Welcome! I've lived here five years (in Lakeview) and I really like it. Evanston's nice, I pass through regularly to go to a friend's house in Wilmette.

Arrange a tour of Lakland when you have a chance, they're good people.

Murder capitol of the nation (despite a gun ban)
Highest sales tax in the country (10.25%)
Highest gas prices in the country
Bumper-to-bumper traffic
FREEZING cold air blowing off the lake in the winter

Sounds like a winner to me...

If the gas prices were so bad, people would stop filling the roads with bumper-to-bumper traffic. I wish they'd double the price of gas. Compare our prices to those in Europe...

And the mass transit does leave a lot to be desired -- although I've been commuting for 13 years or so, and my train has only been late a handful of times.

As for the murder rates...don't forget that last year Chicago (with its gun control laws) was tied with Houston, TX and Dallas, TX (both smaller, both with more lax gun restrictions?).

But anyway, let's see: The Art Institute, the Field Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Shedd Aquarium, the Civic Opera House, the Adler Planetarium, Navy Pier and the Children's Museum, the architectural and sculpture tours, the Taste, Blues Fest, Jazz Fest, The Bears, the Bulls, the Sox, the Cubs, The Fire (sadly they play out in Bridgeview now), the Blackhawks, the Wolves, schools of every form of dance, music, martial arts and fighting, or visual arts, top quality restaurants of every food style or variety you can come up with...oh yeah, Lolla is here too! What else...Lake Michigan, no earthquakes, no tornadoes, no hurricanes...oh, and there's a School of Lutherie that you don't have to enroll in for a year at a time, shelling out 10s of thousands of dollars! Not to mention being big enough to host World Cup matches, and possibly the Olympics...yeah, what a crappy place.

Practically the only thing it DOESN'T have is SXSW...props to Austin on that one!! oh, and the pyramids...

That said they did find the body of Jeniffer Hudson's Nephew 4 blocks from my house...

U of C. Great school, high quality education, and your choice of school's was based on the party scene? Great priorities. If you are in an urban center, and you're relying on a campus for your excitement, that's just silly. In the city excitement of any kind is just a few blocks, or a public transit ride, away.

Chicago has so many great neighborhoods. (over 40 actually) Sounds like you want to be near the downtown.

Not despite... But I don't want to go there now.

Anywho, I love Chicago. I was raised in the suburbs, and had family in the country, but this city is the place for me.

I've only been here for 8 years, but I can't imagine moving away, and look forward to raising kids here. It's a great place to be for culture, food, and doing most anything. It's also a great place to be an amature musician. Lots of opportunties to join bands, play gigs, etc...

So Panda,
Are you planning to move here or are you just dreaming of paradise? :)

Milwaukee, charm?

I lived there for the first 18 years of my life, plus 2 summers after that. I have good memories of attending and (later on) mixing at Summerfest (still one of the best music festivals I've ever seen OR worked at), and of Shank Hall when I was the house sound guy. Beyond that...I'll take Minneapolis. :p

Funny how the grass is aways greener.... In the Burbs, I love Chicago, but was completely blown away with NYC a few years ago.

Still, its funny when you talk to folks out side of the states, its like Al Capone just left the building
