The people at Fodera are amazing and now, so is my bass!
I mentioned in the "What Bass Dissappointed You" thread that my Fodera didn't live up to its claims. I must admit. I'm a bit of a "reverse-snob" when it comes to custom built instruments. More often than not, I just don't think they're worth it.
I've played Sadowsy's and though, 'Eh, it's a nice Fender."
Alembics? Killer sound, but it's that ONE sound.
Ken Smiths -- nice, but heavy, unbalanced and simply not worth the money.
I originally went with a Fodera because it's truly customized, but in the end, my ax just wasn't working for me. I surmised it was inherent to the instrument. Maybe it was the wood. Or the neck-through design. Whatever it was, it just didn't cut it. I shelved it for years.
Well, a rep from Fodera saw that post and contacted me and invited me to the factory to fix the problem. As it turned out there were some issues where the bass wasn't putting out as it should. They went to work.
After all was said and done, the bass sounded a million times better! However, I realized I was sorry I had EMG's in it. I got them because they're hot but I never loved the sound. Then Joey recommended a new design pickup that is a stacked single coil -- so it has the sound of a single but is quiet. They gave me a great deal of those so I went for it.
I must say, now...THIS BASS KILLS!
The bridge pu is like Jaco on steroids! I have more highs than any human can ask for. And the lows are deep and punchy. But what may be best is the mids. They aren't harsh. But they sure do cut. I can get an authentic sound for funk, rock, jazz, pick playing -- you name it.
So after all these years, I really do have the bass of my dreams. It just goes to show how certain perceptions can be made. But I'm glad I spoke out and I'm glad I got to meet the gang at Fodera. They really are craftsman and with no pretense.
Sure, they aren't cheap. They are the Rolls Royce of basses. But take it from a guy who isn't swayed by fancy workmanship or elitist attitudes. Hell, I think some Squire's are as good as a lot of 1K basses out there. I'm not impressed with price tags. But if you're looking to get something that is truly a notch above the rest, check these guys out. EIGHTEEN YEARS AFTER I BOUGHT MY BASS, they were giving personal attention and service to it to make sure I was happy. Good luck finding that with some of those other companies.
I'm not too proud to admit I was wrong.
Thanks guys. Looking forward to many happy years of bassplaying with my old/new Fodera.
