I play 200+ shows a year in a busy show band. For years I’d set up 2 basses on a stand, ready to go. Only needed the backup 1-2x, so I’ve gotten smart- I BRING the backup but leave it in the car outside, so I don’t have to load it in. If there’s a trainwreck emergency we’ll just take a short set break and I’ll go get it outta the car.

Ooooo, my immediate reaction was: THEFT!! Hope your car A. has a good trunk and B. looks like UTTER SHYTE so nobody breaks into it. You want the crook thinking, "Jesus, this guy's worse off than ME. Maybe I oughtta LEAVE something?!" I always drive shyte-mobiles, and nobody's ever broken into one, 45 years and counting...

You're lucky. Older cars get targeted for theft more often; Their security is dated and there's higher value in parting them out since OEM parts are no longer made.

Kind of a follow-up to this, since I never put up the 'end of the story' so to speak.

I ultimately replaced all three of the regular tuners and replaced the Carvin detuner as well, as all four were knockoff tuners from somewhere in Asia. The real Gotohs are much smoother and seem to hold tune better than the Carvin-branded ones. The detuner is hands down a FAR better setup. The Carvin branded one never worked to my satisfaction and I got to the point where I hated using it. I decided to go ahead and replace it at this time with a real Hipshot and what a difference! This one actually WORKS the way it is intended to work. I might actually make use of it again.
