Ibanez AEB 5E

I bought an Ibanez AEB 5E last winter and I can't get the intonation set right. I talked to a luthier friend of mine and he said that I need a set of strings made specifically for an acoustic bass guitar which are higher tension than what I have on right now. I have D'Addario ETB 92Ms on now and considered going to chromes which are higher tension..
The instrument is medium scale. Does tension have any bearing on intonation?
