Ibanez BTB’s

Now here is my latest question. I asked this one on the BTB owners club on Facebook. The Steve Digiorgio is the only fretless BTB available now, but apparently it’s not the first. I remember in late 2019, early 2020 pre Covid that there were 2 fretless BTB’s on zzounds. One was a 5 string and one was a 6 string. They were a blueish color and I think they had the fretlines. Yesterday to make sure I wasn’t crazy I typed up Ibanez fretless BTB and sure enough they popped up on a guitar review website. The date on it was 2019. So out of curiosity, what happened? It seems like they were forgotten. Did Covid interfere with the production of them?
Nah, they were just a short run. I managed to grab a six-string version (BTB846F) back then. Great bass! IIRC @NeonVomit had one as well.

So what preamp is in the Steve Digiorgio bass? I could imagine it’s a step up from the usual BTB preamps, not that I have ever found anything wrong with those. I’m impressed with this bass. Finally found a fretless bass that gives me the tone I want without using a bunch of effects

It has the Ibanez Vari-Mid preamp, and is the only non-EHB bass to use it.

I just picked up a nearly new Ibanez BTB705LM in a trade today. It is absolutely gorgeous and sounds so crisp and clean. The only downside I see in it is that it’s kind of heavy.

Yup I have one. It's great! Wonderful tone and playability. Looking to sell it however (to fund a custom built fretless 6, if the cost weren't an issue I'd hold onto it)

I tried the Steve Digiorgio bass out practicing with the guitar player yesterday. The bass did not disappoint. Easily the best sounding fretless bass I have played. The issue may be that my darkglass combo amp may not be enough to carry the bass without me being drowned out. May need a bigger amp when playing which I have luckily. . That’s not the fault of the bass though

a few changes have been made to my favorite bass, the BTB 740

installed the Nordstrand Big Splits tonight. not exactly a drop in. i had to take the dremel to the pup cavities as they were a hair too short (left to right looking at it in the pics). with a small sanding drum and a bit of patience i was able to get them to drop in. i had previously replaced the pre-amp with a pre-wired Bartolini unit which added the push/pull volume knob for active/passive operation as well as different mid frequency setpoints on the 3 way switch. the new knobs and a set of GHS flats had also been previously added.

i did a quick operational check after soldering it up and i think i made a good decision. i couldn't turn it up much because it was nearly midnight but my initial impressions are very good. i like what i've heard so far. i'll get the setup sorted tomorrow and put some time in with it. looking forward to hearing it in a live setting.
