Speaking of the piezos, I find some of my pedals don't like them either. My MXR octaver and Ibanez tuner prefer to have the piezo turned down or off. Chorus seems to be OK, as are overdrives.

I currently believe the tracking/level or frequency sensing part of some effects is thrown off by the high levels of infrasound the piezos produce. The synth in my AX3B is unusable with them, though the octaver seems OK. Ibanez would have done well to include a high-pass filter in the piezo section of the electronics. In a good pair of headphones, I can easily hear the "thumps" from the piezos not there at all from the magnetics.

Someone earlier suggested what looks like a nice three-band parametric EQ box (thank you!), though that'd be overkill for me. An active multi-pole analog or digital filter HPF box that can steeply roll off below 30 Hz or so is what I'll soon look for. It'll be first in the effects chain.

Finally got a chance to run the 700 through my gig rig, and Oh My Goodness does it sound good. It is currently wearing La Bella black tape's, and I see no reason to change! I am leaning toward bridge on full, neck off, and rolling in a touch of the piezos. Nice and dark and thumpy, with just enough Mwah when needed! And this bass is so light. My old back loves it.

Just put La Bella black tapes on my 700 too. Lower tension than stock. They're not buzzing yet there's almost too much mwah. I'll raise the saddles a bit. Very comfortable playing and sound good - happy with these.

Count me in! Just got a six and I'm loving it!

I'm starting to play with recording a little (though the new strings still have a little too much zing). One thing I'm curious about is if anybody has modded this to have a separate output for the piezo? It would be really nice to be able to blend mag/piezo in post rather that at recording time. Seems like it could be straight forward, but I'm infamous for saying that without knowing the implementation details.

I like how you think! Could be interesting!

Hi everyone,
Bought one and love it immediately! :D

Ibanez_SRF705.jpg

The bass is awesome in every way - sound, ergonomy, weight... I thought that I would have problems as a fretless beginner but it is so easy to play I've never imagined it would be :smug:

Only one thing is strange, it has swapped piezo pots - volume <--> tone :cautious:
By the way, piezo tone pot makes very subtle change, is this normal?
Thanks for any information.
Regards!

When I received mine, I asked the exact same questions. The knobs did not seem to produce the results I was expecting, especially the subtly of the piezos. I have since read through this entire thread, and it does seem that many of these basses have electronic oddities.
I am by no means an expert, just pointing out what I have read in this thread and experienced for myself.

I'm glad you like yours, I loved mine too (easily the most divine neck ever), but was never able to bond with the tight 16.5mm string spacing. Mine is in the classifieds right now, but I fear that my post in this thread (page 73) questioning the electronics of this bass have left me (or the bass) a social pariah.

I've read almost the entire thread but I don't see any resolving about piezo tone pot efficiency.
Maybe it's normal for piezo, unfortunately I don't have any comparison.
Anyway, I'm going to take it to my luthier for overall setup so I will ask him to check the electronics.
I will write if I find out anything.

I also noticed the piezo tone pot on the 705 has less effect than on my 700. Now after a couple months and gigs on the 705, the B string piezo pot has to be cranked much higher than the others to output the same level. Then yesterday I noticed (just) the E piezo distorts when softly played. Both of those symptoms are new in the past week or two. Today I'm calling the vendor and if needed, Ibanez to arrange for repair or return. Relatively minor, yet a bass like this should not have such problems only two months in.

Since last posting I've also tried different strings. D'Addario tapewounds on the 705 have a good sound and lower tension, with a somewhat grabby surface. LaBella black tapes on the 700 are keepers, once they replaced one string that immediately broke on the bridge end. Nice rounded yet lively sound and slippery. EB cobalt flatwounds were a bust for me... the G string even on a replacement set sounded flat/thuddy. For now the stock D'Addario chromes are back on the 705 and I'm thinking of trying their halfwounds for a little brighter tone.
