Ibanez questions (SR500)

I got a new SR505 about six months ago. I like the sound and the feel of the neck and the body. The EQ is very powerfull--a little goes a long way.

I didn't like the quality of the fret work or the nut--I had to do a bit of repair and set-up to make it really nice to play.

I've been using Fender 8250 nickel-wound strings on it, and it like the sound--not too bright. It came with Elixirs on it, but the E string was very bad. After the Elixirs, I put a set of TI Powerbass strings on it, which I like and have used on other basses, but those are way too expensive to use all the time--about $60 for a five string set?

Now that I have the SR505 set up the way I like it, I REALLY like it.

I wouldn't worry too much about the wear. I've owned my SR506 for 3 years now and all you need to do it is hit it with some "Howard's Feed-n-Wax" once in a while and it'll look just like new. Sometimes better than new. Heh heh...

Oil finishes are nothing to be scared about. They simple need a different type of care then poly finished instruments, that's all.

One other difference in the SR lineup that I didn't see mentioned is that all of them are made of mahogany except the SR600. That one's made of ash. Also they all have 5 piece jatoba/bubinga necks except for the SR530. That one has a finished 5 piece maple/rosewood neck.

I myself don't like the natural mahogany color so I opted for the Sr535. For strings I've been using Elixers and D'Addario XL's.

I'm not into that color/finish either, but the Japanese version of the SR500/505 also comes in trans black flat over mahogany.
I think it looks pretty good - don't know if one can get one here or not.

I've never seen one in that color here. I said it in another post about Ibanez and I'll say it again. That is one thing that I really do dislike about Ibanez. The way other markets and/or domestic lines get different options.

The SR300 comes with a maple board. I wish they'd offer that on the SR535 too. I also don't like the way they take the same bass and charge extra for the color of the paint. I really do miss the old days when they gave you a wider variety of color options in each model.

Well, thanks to everyone for the advice. I'm thinking I'll have my bass by next month... maybe in three weeks or so. It's been so long since I bought a new instrument! I'm very excited!

I got a question, most ppl with SR500 say that the only problem is the unprotective finish that weraos off while playing after long time. Is the same problem on the SR600 too?

I've just purchased a new SR500 and am concerned about the finish also. Has anyone here tried putting some kind of protective finish or polycoat on one of these oil-finished basses to protect it?

Besides just the finish - the SR700 has a figured maple top wood in amber or charcoal brown. Somebody here just recently got one in the charcoal brown finish, and posted some pics - really beautiful. They are great quality basses. I'm on my 6th.

I use Fender Jazz 99% of the time and will throw in a Longhorn or Thunderbird here and there. I just picked up a 1993 SR 500. My 1st Ibanez... The neck is awesome, very thin and fast. I didn't think I'd EVER buy an Ibanez.. I'm glad I did.

As far as the finish on the SR 500.......... This one had a Black stripe painted under the strings. I used Citristrip to remove it. This finish held up just fine!!!

I've had GAS for a SR500 for a long time. I ended up missing the opportunity to get the last one from a shop and they no longer bring those to my country.
