The pickup and knob issues look to be due to someone's half-way attempt to install EMG pups into this baby (the bridge, clearly marked in the close-ups) and the knobs are standard EMG preamp knobs, so there's a fair chance you might have to shell out $105 for a new EMG neck pickup (depending what's already in the bridge, I'd recommend a 40P5/40DC or Dual 40TW setup) and end up with an all-EMG pickup & preamp electronics upgrade in a killer bass for under $500. Amazing the luck some people have... :smug:

That's exactly what is was, opened the back cover, the neck pickup wasn't even connected. Broken ground wire and shield was shorting against the battery terminal... Stellar work by who ever tried it. The EMG sounded like shart when I replaced the battery and started to clean up the wiring. I hope there was no damage to it. I had dual EMGs on my Les Paul, it was almost TOO much pick-up! Think I would have the same issue upgrading the neck on this one, or is it just going to be easier to keep the electronics straight?

Also you mentioned that the knobs look like a stock EMG kit that may have come with the pick-up? If so I'm severely disappointed, I would have loved to have the original hardware, if nothing else to have the old parts for value... So I'll pick out some nice wicked aftermarket knobs and make her look sweet with some originality instead of the crap-tastic plastic...

Speaking of which, does anyone know where I can get the head-stock cover plate!? If I can't get one cheap, I have a machine shop, I'm considering flow-jetting a thin aluminum cover myself and etching my initials on it or something lol.

Alright! New crossroads here!

After dealing with a total Pr!ck at EMG on the phone who just thought customer service should be insulting me and telling me how much I didn't know... I am turning to you guys for some help again!


Ok, I am buying the pick-ups for the bass today to have them installed. Currently, the one EMG installed. Just looked and it's a 40DC. Seems pretty straight forward. Now what I need to determine is it's mate and the position of the respective pick-ups!

I know most of this is preference and most of it is based on style music being played. Here's what I can tell you about my expectations:

I play 90% covers ranging from 80's rock/metal (ZZ Top, Journey, Bon Jovi), 90's alternative/grunge/rock (Nirvana, Greenday, Pearl Jam), to 00's Metal/Hard Rock/Retro (Fear Factory, Nickleback, Three Days Grace, Ect) And tons more. So what I guess I hope to achieve, if possible, is be able to adjust from one gut-wrenching extreme deep metal down-tuned sound, but be able to clean it up via fade and pedal filters back up to nice mids with clear lows and highs without sounding like I'm playing in mud.

Currently, my Traben with a lower DC and angled J are the only familiarity I have. Currently I get the lows but mids and highs leave a lot to be desired unless I give up on the lows completely.

So what I'm thinking I should to is:

| EMG - 40DC |

As far as the pick-ups, I appreciate it guys, but I couldn't wait! Unfortunately, without the old pick-ups, I'm just going with the EMG path.

Currently it has one 40CS, and I JUST bought a 40J off ebay for just over $100 shipped. So I'm gonna go with the 40CS at the bridge and the 40J at the neck. Hopefully the tech doesn't have any problems sorting out the rats nest!

Hopefully I made a good choice!! We'll see! I just can't wait any longer to get her finished and get my hands on her! Lmao!

Sorry, bumping this, need some input!

Dude from the shop, who has been awesome so far, is asking me about the configuration on my pickups! I just dropped off the second pickup last night. So far here's the situation to re-cap:


94 Ibanez SR 1205 FL, NT
Halfrounded Strings being installed at set-up

EMG Pickups

Currently have two EMG pickups available:
40CS
40J

I'm gonna go with the CS at the bridge and the J at the neck.

Does that sound like a reasonable configuration to get the most out of the sound options?

Just got a call from the shop, dude told me it was done, didn't even know I had dropped off another new pick-up last night, wasn't aware I wanted Med-wounds, and did,'t replace the hardware! Argh, good guy, but poor shop communication!

I believe it was made in 1994 and is turquoise

It's labeled here as a 1994 Ibanez SR1205. The only difference is the one that I saw was marked as an SR1205 FL (Fretless). This was confirmed by the markings in the picture she has sent. But otherwise, it looks identical, I hadn't even noticed it was neck-through!

All in all this seems like a steal! Can anyone confirm? I wanna pounce on this she's holding it for me for now but I don't wanna wait!
