Ibanez sr500

I tried a bunch of basses in the $450 - $600 range last year and I ended up liking the SR 500 the best. The build quality is great and the pickups/preamp are a notch or two above brands like Schecter (IMO - but I don't like the EMG-HZs). The biggest negative on the SR500 is the finish - you see a lot of used ones out there with large patches of the finish worn off (especially ones with slap-happy owners). And, like most Asian-built instruments, resale value isn't the best (which means you might be able to find a deal on the used one, though).

+1 this entire post. I own the six string variant and it's a great instrument.

I actually purchased one of these yesterday, good deal new at the local GC. I bought a Geddy Lee first, but after I had played the SR500 and went home with the Geddy I couldnt get the SR500 out of my head and drive back 2 days later and exchanged it. That has been the best decision I've made in a long time, this bass is worth every penny and would be well over a grand if produced here.

Would you mind explaining what about the SR500 you preferred tonally over the GL?

contrary to the above posts, please try out a schecter.
much better quality than ibanez, and GREAT basses. Try the
C-4, Custom-4, Elite-4, and even the Studio-4.
great basses. I have schecters and ibanez's and fender and gibson. love em' all.

Ibanez are great basses, but lose resale value FAST in the states.

also, as far as ibanez, try the SRX1EX2 or something like that. A great bass, and i think it's a little bit cheaper than the SR500. they even make one with a flamed top!
The Ibanez Doug Winbish signature models are pretty good too.

I own Ibanez and also had Schecter; in my book Ibanez owns Schecter: they sound better, they feel better (you won't find a more comfortable neck to play on - by comparison some Schecters have the same neck width as an Ibanez Soundgear, but they're thicker and don't feel as good as those wenge/bubinga Ibanez necks). SR500 is one hell of a beast, top quality, exotic woods, Barts, you name it. And its tone is so powerful, yet so clear and rich in harmonics. You can't go wrong with this bass!

I was looking at getting a five string and my choices were either the SRX705 or the SR505 (both Ibanez). I wanted to get the SR Prestige 20th five string but it is out of my price range. Now I'm leaning towards the SR505 because the finish looks nicer and it seems to come highly recommended.

SRX series have humbucker pickups, so depending if you like them or not, that's the series you should look into (I actually like humbuckers myself.) --Kent
