Ibanez sr506 strip down and Tru-oil refinish

The Ibanez sr506 is a great six string bass with a really crappy finish that wears off easily.

I sanded off all of the old finish and took the time to refinish the body and neck with Tru-oil. Wow! I am happy that I did. I would recommend this to anyone with an sr506 that has a failing finish.

Yes, it did take about two weeks of my life (a little at a time) but I ended up with a beautiful bass that I'd be happy to show off at any gig.

That looks a lot better than the production finish, maybe you should tell Ibanez to consider making it that way to begin with. Plenty of examples of people complaining about the standard finish to back up the suggestion.

It would be great if they did that finish at the factory but it took me a couple weeks of about 1 1/2 hours a day to get it done. I'm sure their finish takes a few minutes in the factory. A hand oiled finish from the factory would up the new cost considerably.

It was my hope that my project would be successful and that I could inspire others bass players out there to do the same.

Big Ibanez fan here, but I too, dislike the non-gloss Ibanez finishes. Great job with the Tru-Oil!

About to do exactly this on a 1992 SR2005 with a really bad oil finish someone tried to apply. You can feel the walnut neck stringers stick up on the back of the neck and the whole thing is disgusting. Hopefully it ends up half as nice as yours

I have the 2004 version. My oldest current bass. Still looks good.........

2004 is a different bass, MIK. The later ones are made in Indonesia and are substantially lighter and shed their finish.
