This bass is beautiful, I want it! Though I can't help but feel like they are a poor man's Fodera knock off (who came up with the single cut body style first?). Well I'm poor so it peaked my interest. $1k is a bit out of my price range but there's payments...!

I picked one of these up to try out and have it strung E-C. The body ergos are a bit different than my other basses, but it is a comping machine strung that way...

Keep your eyes on the classifieds and on Reverb. They pop up used on a relatively regular basis. Great basses, indeed, especially if you dig the Bart sound. Fretwork is impeccable and they're light as a feather on the shoulder and back.

You could always argue that just about any bass is the poor man's Fodera, since most other basses don't cost as much as a small car. :D

Thanks. I admit I had low expectations as the lower end Barts can be a bit shrill and I've seen some basses with some shoddy finishing. This one, other than a nick in the edge of the fingerboard (that I'd never feel) and a wobbly bass knob (easily fixed) - this this plays like a dream. I didn't play it very long before swapping to E-C but the B sounded perfectly fine. E-C though it sings. Tonality is totally different than the Smith - much more open (to quote my wife, "hollow"). Sometimes that is a good thing, other times not. The 50/50 setting sounds almost like a guitar with P90s which is a cool tone for comping and also begs to be slapped.

I may try one of the prestige ones with the Big Singles. While I've never been a J-bass kinda guy, maybe I'm ready to mess around with that sound for some situations now.

i love those barts - i have 'em in my SR500, and i find them as far from shrill as you can get. rich and low and really nice.

btw, nostatic, you can try the nordy big singles at some local GCs - they had and probably still have an SR1800e at hollywood GC, and it's been manhandled, but wow, it can sing. and i've seen them at sherman oaks GC, as well.
