Ibanez SRX Bass PFR Pickups Preamp & Balance/Blend Control
Hello, I am thinking about the SRX bass electronics. I have been trying the bass with the EQ set to the flat points. Trying each pickup soloed and also with the balance control centered. I seem to not find where it sounds 'right'. I feel like when the balace is centered the sound seems choked somewhat. When using the bridge pickup alone it sounds maybe brighter because it is close to the bridge. The neck pickup seems okay but not quite 'right'. When I try using the EQ it usually seems like too much and not really making things better. My previous experience with humbuckers is a Stingray where the single humbucker is farther away from the bridge. And also a Squier Jaguar with Humbucker. Didn't find very usable sounds on it for majority of playing.
The sound seems kind of like a 'tink' sound. Probably not very good description. but fingerstyle seems not quite right and if you slap on the 'G' it really makes kind of a 'tink' sound and seems unpleasant.
I am wondering if that is the sound of the pickups or the preamp or the actual instrument. And if the balance/blend is changing the sound from what it would be if you had 2 volumes (one for each pickup). When you just barely move the balance/blend control from center it sounds like you pretty much only get the pickup in the direction you are turning. So not much blend happening.
I am wondering what the preamp does to the sound even with controls set 'flat'. Is there still a 'voice' or 'character' or EQ that affects or 'colors' the bass even with controls flat ?
Do the SRX's passive PFR pickups work well without the preamp ? (I have also seen these pickups in the Iceman EX bass.) Have some people tried that ? or do the pickups really need the preamp ?
Does the balance control affect the sound a lot even with having the active preamp ? (mostly I have played Jazz and P-Basses, the Jazz having Vol,Vol, Tone) I have played MM Stingray with single pickup but the pickup is farther from the bridge than the SRX bridge pickup.
If a person routed the body (using part of the existing bridge pickup route) and put in a MM style pickup in the bridge it might be disappointing because the pickup would be too close to the bridge? maybe you would need to put them in both postions ? but has EB changed the pickups that go into the HH dual humbucker basses from what would go into a regular single pickup Stingray ?
Also wondering how the SRX dual humbucker bass would differ from like a Thunderbird or Epiphone Thunderbird, or like a Schecter with EMG HZ's and EMG preamp, or other dual humbucker combinations.
