I'm bumping this very old thread because I never did what I talked about 9 years ago.

I'm seriously considering it once again, though, and I'd like any suggestions for what's a decent, not-terribly expensive and easy-to-use recording device.

if you own a computer (probably so), then get an affordable interface and go to town.

PC is a good idea
Or if you want portable and have an iPhone or iPad
Both have decent Mics built into them
Also Both can handle a USB compliant interface
People pay mega $$$ for their phones. Might as well take advantage of them. They really are high quality devices these days.

What’s your end goal? Record yourself posterity? Songwriting? Collaborate with others?

Apogee Jam does what you want i think? It would let you plug in after an amplifier or you could mic your cabinet and connect it to a phone.

What's really cool is that, after recording and then listening, I actually sound a little better than I first thought I would. It would appear my practicing really has paid off.
