sorry I really couldn't answer your original question. Samick is a huge offshore manufacturer, like Cort. Decent quality builds, but probably lacking in the electronics. Poor resale value, but if you are just starting out, it is fine as an entry level bass. Check everything you normally would if buying a bass. Neck, action, frets, tuners, pots, weight, balance, fit, finish. If you have an amp, take yours and see if you like the tone of the bass. I'm not telling you what to spend, but probably somewhere in the $200 range. JMO
Thanks for that! I found something similar on youtube called the Samick artist series. The guy is wanting 125 with a small amp. I just want something better than the bass I have as we are going into the studio next month and I don't want people saying "ew, what's that farting noise?"
Unfortunately, my budget is almost non existent. I did see some Rogues for the same price or close on musicans friends, but I really don't want to buy something I can't try out first!

I had one and compared to another cheap 5stringer it was "ok" and I used it until I could find something better. The string spacing was tight, the pickups were cheap, and at the time, not worth it to mod it and dump 2-300 in it so I sold it to a kid for 4 honda aluminum wheels. ( I made out ) --lol....

I forgot to add in defense of someone wanting one that although cheap, it was a perfect bass. no fret issues, no neck warped beyond adjustment issues, no scratchy pots or low output pups, no crappy hard to turn tuners, it balanced well, the cutouts on the horns helped with upper fret access, never an issue with intonation... ( just like any mid-level bass ) 
I have that bass, it was the first one I ever bought (about 16 years ago). Great for learning on or as a backup bass. Decent hardware, crap electronics.
I actually just put EMGs in mine and it's taken on an entirely new life. It's still got the same feel, but sounds infinitely better.

I would have done the same, but back then I was a poor soul and buying a 150-200 set of EMGs was out of the question so I sold it.
the OEM pups were so microphonic I think they picked up my singing coming thru the monitors as much as the microphone did

Yeah the original ones were... less than good. It's really amazing the difference now, it's an entirely new animal.
Ok, so I tried it out. Decided not to get it. Wasn't even the original owner! Had a KISS sticker on it that they took off, so there's some big round sticker residue left on the front. Strings were too close. Was a wide range of output between a string pluck and a slap.
Then I saw a schecter diamond series studio 4 with hard case for 400 for sale. Going to try that out this weekend!

if a 5'er is what you want, there are just TOOOOO many out there already that are excellent players from many brand names. Always remember for 100, your gonna get what you pay for, and then not be satisfied for long before your dumping parts into it and now that 100 is now 300...etc.
that's why I sold my Samick, to make it play to my needs would have required some cash-flow put into it, just like lowest-end did to his to make it the way he likes it, and he has had it for years since he did the mods.

I had a very similar Samick for many years. It was pretty much identical, except it was active/passive and had Saturn shaped inlays. Passive, the sound was horribly thin, nasally, microphonic, etc.... Active, the sound was full and clean. I played MANY gigs with it, recorded with it, and held on to it for about 7 or 8 years. I'd love to have it now. I've heard they are hit and miss, though.
