ideal rhythm section

My favorites:

- Anthony Jackson/Gadd with Paul Simon
- Anthony Jackson/El Negro with Michelle Camilo
- Jimmy Johnson/Carlos Vega with James Tayolr
- Marcus Miller or Daryl Jones/Omar Hakim... Sanborn/Sting
- Jaco/Alex Acuna... Weather Report
- Lenny White/Stanley... with Return To Forever
- Chris Squire/Alan White.... Yes


Those are probably my favorite sections in context of the music they were playing.:hyper:

ideal for what?

i.e., some of my favorite (once extant) rhythm sections are Paul Jackson/Mike Clarke, and Jeff Berlin/Bill Bruford... but I can't imagine either of them being "ideal" at what the other excelled at. I guess if "ideal" means "capable of excelling equally well at anything" I'd have to say Will Lee/Steve Gadd. But that's almost playing it safe. I think a more compelling survey would be Most Magical Rhythm Section.

What I mean is, "if you could throw together what you consider to be the ultimate rhythm section, who would be in it?"

But that just begs the question: "ultimate" at what?

I'd love to throw together Doug Wimbish & Simon Phillips...but I can't imagine wanting to hear them play Motown covers, salsa, traditional jazz standards, or speed metal. They'd be the "ultimate" rhythm section at...um, whaddya call it? Oh yeah: "NAMM Show Booth Demo Music"

I mean, good at playing good music. For example: here would be my ideal rhythm section as part of an ideal band for a given musician. i would love to see these cats on tour!

Joni Mitchell - guitar, leader

Herbie Hancock - keys

Pat Metheny - guitar

Joshua Redman - saxophone

Anthony Jackson - contrabass guitar (good old AJ and his terminology....)

Carter Beauford - Drums
