Identify Bass and why so many pick ups

It sounds great! She is just starting out - been playing double for 9 years and is going into music for college - was hoping to expand her skills. She had only played electric bass once when they asked her to be in the pit for the school musical mama mia

n-J, n-J/P, P, P/b-J, n-J/b-J, b-J combinations and 50's kitchen technology make a museum or really cool piece.
I can't help think the museum status is maintained if you don't put some hard finish on it, but for a playing instrument I'd consider it. Depends on how it sounds of course. If has a crisp lively sound, don't touch it, but if it's a bit dull, it would help.

Whoever stripped the finish off that thing hit the lottery - that's one of the best revealed woods I've seen off a mass produced instrument.

Personally I'd coat it with a thin transparent to offer a bit of protection, then make a custom pickguard to visually unify all of the pickups and controls, but that's just me. She got a bass with versatile tonal options and a unique character. Jam on!

It's GOT a Custom Pickguard!!! What does "visually unify" MEAN? It's ALL There!!! Crazy stuff like that, you're going to take away thousands of dollars of value from this important artifact. assuming the culture is still going that far in the future...

Modded my '75 P like to JPJ in '80 because I wanted a "P" + "Jazz" option for T-40 bands.
Bought it used $200 during the time "Oh well it's not pre-CBS" was a big thing, so went ahead and modded it. SD QuarterPounders, vol/tone stack knobs each pup, kill switch, BadAss II bridge.
Still play it! Still love it!

I swear there is a TB legend about a Bullet bass...it was a very old bass...

The Fender labeled Bullets were US made, and the Deluxe is 34" scale.
I have a short scale version that is pretty original. Love the Tele/original P-style headstock, but not a fan of the Mustang pickups or the jack through the flimsy pickguard, so I concur with those mods being upgrades.

Recently purchased this electric bass for my daughter - she is a double bassist and wanted to try electric bass. I know it is a fender bullet bass made in the USA probably 1983 ish - I was wondering about all the pick-ups and did they originally make an unfinished bass?

Reviving this thread, but I love those pickup surround plates.
