Identify the SX vs. Fender in the mix thread

It doesn't have to be said. If there is an experiment to prove the cheaper drug A is just as good at treating a sickness than the more expensive drug B, then what do the results say? Would people still want to buy the more expensive drug? The experiment speaks for itself.

If I had an Audi and a souped-up Dodge Spirit and they somehow hit the streets just the same, and I went around showing how it was so...then surely people would ask me why I still owned the Audi.

Do people still want to buy diamonds when cubic zirconia is available? Just sayin' ;)

or are they both viable options aimed at differnt segments of the market?

I was thinking the same. I emailed Kurt, and he said than the neck pocket in SX basses isn't identical to fender's, but for what I read here with a little work a replacement neck would fit anyway.

I was thinking in a black Ursa 2 (Jazz bass) + Mighty mite maple neck. Just add the Baddass and you are ready with your Geddy Lee wanna-be :p

That's sounds good. I've been thinking about getting a jazz to try because I'm tired of seeing Stingray brag about the jazz pups :D

FWIW, the mighty mite fit VERY tightly in the pocket, much better than the original neck fit(and better than any Fender fit that I recall seeing) I'm not going to try it, but I wouldn't be surprised if the neck stayed in place w/o screws. It's that tight of a fit.

As far as this thread goes, Fender's place in the bass world has long been established and I don't think they'll be going anywhere soon, reguardless of competition. That includes Lakland, Sadowsky, and the lowly SX. What is very cool is that for very little dough, someone on a budget has a very real alternative to getting good sounds and playability. Eventually they may get the bug and go for a real Fender, or they may just need a backup, or one to do the gigs that are less than ideal for a $1000+ instrument. No matter, it can be done quiet well without breaking the bank. That seems like a good thing to me.:)

I have no idea what you're talking about.

Yeah, but what if the cheaper drug has negative side effects in some people? Sorta' like what if the cheaper bass doesn't feel comfortable, look good or have acceptable hardware to some people.

... in bass lingo, you would change that to "so some drunken spud doesn't fall into the stage, knock my vintage fender over, then puke on it."

I HATE it when that happens! :D

Outdoor shows can be rough on equipment, too, what with direct sun, wind, rain and whatever else mother nature might throw at you.

This was exactly the original reason I bought my SX. I figured having a "beater/backup" for outdoor shows was a good insurance policy against screwing up the old Fender which was my main "workhorse" at the time.

Funny thing along the way was , that I discovered the SX was a decent enough bass in it's own right, and after some tweaking, and dialing in, it began to really shine on it's own. :)

I NEVER had any intentions of that bass filling the role it does now when it was originaly purchased.

I will give it a try with an old Samick Jazz bass. I think it's 10+ years old, probably basswood, but it's the only thing that I have to experiment with :p

I played an outdoor evening gig this past Friday. A lot of bugs were attracted to the lights we had...we make a joking comment about how many we had already ate, so a girl from the crowd graciously comes up and douses us with deep woods off between songs. She literally got more on my bass than me - I thought it was funny. Maybe not so much had it been my American Standard - ok, it still would have been funny, just many days later. :D

Well, you aren't me. ;)

Hahahaha, I knew that would be the response. I was personalizing the issue.

That's cool. I don't have to take any of it with a grain of salt, cause I live with it every day. :), and I've seen what it's capable of first hand. :) It does a fine job of doing what I ask of it, and that's plenty good enough for me. :)

Well, you aren't me. ;)

why should you have to make a choice? and honestly, why do you care what he plays? i sense some gratuitious pot-stirring going on.

Just spirited discussion. :)

I care what people play when they have threads devoted to presenting evidence which may or may raise up one brand and/or possibly implicate another (regardless of brand, model, etc.). It is not a demeaning or hurtful question. The only way to get to know someone in a forum is to ask questions such as this. He seems to have no problem responding to what I'm asking. So why do you?:)

Yep. They are. Which segment are you?

I'm the segment that would rather throw $200 worth of upgrades on a $100 bass with a very solid foundation that can hold it's own, whether you want to compare sound, playability or looks with an $1100 Fender. That frees up $800 for my wife and kids to enjoy, so everyone is happy, and I'm not missing anything but a sticker. :D

Since the wife and kids are happy with my approach to gear, I couldn't care less what some gear snob thinks. ;)

I'm stealing a quote from Dr Cheese's thread :"It's the Indian, not the arrows" :bassist:

When I made a comment about this thread stroking the egos of SX-lovers, I was making a non-specific observation. Seems like a few took it as pertaining to them and corrected me as such. As I stated earlier, the experiment speaks for itself. Whether a scientist refuses the evidence or generally ignores it, there will just be another scientist who embraces it. So if the OP and a few others aren't SX-lovers getting their egos stroked in this thread, the thread itself still leaves the door wide-open for that. That's what I've been saying in more than a few too many words. Some people just take this thread as some all-encompassing truth and that is just as silly as some Fender lover dismissing it all together. This is all.

because i have a problem with people telling other people what they should own. if he doesn't want to sell his old precision, why do you care? he already answered you once. how many times should he have to answer the same question, and a rather angry and poor-spirited question at that? sorry michael, but it is.

Sounds like you are far more angry than me.:) I never told him what he should own. In fact, most of my posts were questions. Am I not allowed to ask questions to understand why he has the position he does, or his demeanor behind his question? You may know him better than I. I found it odd someone would own an expensive bass and yet so readily advocate a cheaper one. He has answered me regarding that question, and I have accepted his answers. Occasionally I have asked other questions to understand further. What's it to you? If you don't like my questions, move on.;)

I'm taking an oft-hated and easily obnoxious position and trying to make it of use. Seems like most people would just rather hear other people come in and gripe about how the results are skewed because one has a brass nut...or Ernie Ball strings instead of D'Addarios, or something ridiculous like that. It's easier to enjoy yourself when the opposing position is made to look that stupid. Then again, this is assuming I haven't looked like an idiot yet with mine.:hiding:
