identify this Bass!!

If you guys ever hear of a band called maps & atlases coming to your town- make sure to check them out. It's wild stuff.

The bass player is especially cool. He also plays a bass I cannot for the life of me identify.

It looks like an EB but it has a special top wood and inlayed pickguard- 2 options I've never heard offered on either stingray or sterling.



When I saw them at pop scene in SF, I couldn't make out the logo on the headstock. any thoughts what it could be?

Hey man, looks like it could be one of the 30th anniversary musicman stingrays? Could be wrong but i'm sure they were offered with some fancy tops.

It's a EB Music Man 20th music man anniversary Stingray. With a maple top and a pickguard that doesn't come off.

it is weird though that they wouldn't include that 3-way pickup selecter switch. It was special ordered that way perhaps?

I llloooovvvveee Maps and Atlases. But hearing the bass on the records kind of turns me off to Stingrays. Maybe they're just not the sound I like.

It might just be me, but that thing looks like a short scale to me. Other than that it looks like a Musicman of some kind. Great example of how not to use your right hand in that picture too.

It is somewhat confusing...The 4 string with natural quilted maple top is the 20th Anniversary Stingray. The 5 string with the burst finishes are 20th Anniversary Stingray 5 models. In the end, it is a good way for the manufacturers to make a "special" edition and charge a lot more for it. Marketing at it's best.

Not to mention that the anniversaries occured 11 years apart...'96 for the 4 string (introduced in '76) and '07 for the 5 string (introduced in '87).

Man, you beat me to it. Major differences in the basses. As already noted, the 4 string does not have the switching capability that the 5 had. If I remember correctly the 5 has a mahogany tone block in the center of the body as well. That said, I did see a "one off" 20th Anniversary 4 string many years ago that actually had the series/parallel switch like the SR5. I should have bought it because it was so unique
