This has sadly been my experience. I have known a number of people who slid down the hole of dementia and it's not a pretty sight.
As for the PC police comments in this thread, I think that too often these days having a modicum of discretion, class, or decorum gets easily conflated with "being PC" and is more easily dismissed by use of this mechanism. Regarding the idea of a thread devoted to the idea of making fun of people who are less acute than we are, I am reminded of a beautiful quote from Will Durant:
"To speak ill of others is a dishonest way of praising ourselves; let us be above such transparent egotism. If you can't say good and encouraging things, say nothing. Nothing is often a good thing to do, and always a clever thing to say."
The above is posted not in an attempt to shut down the thread, but as a reminder that compassion for those impressionable people who fall victim to malevolent people and scams is not a weakness; I would argue the opposite, in fact.
I can have compassion and not understand at the same time.
I have compassion for a thief stealing food to feed his family. But I don't understand why they wouldn't just go to any number of organizations in place that would help them in a legal way. That's probably a bad example since the victims of the scam mentioned earlier haven't done anything illegal. But you get my point. I can be compassionate and still not understand how this kind of thing happens.
I think the scammers should be put under the jail and throw away the key (speaking of lack of compassion).
But, honestly, I'm not talking about people who can be diagnosed with anything, be it age related or not.
If these guys have been able to get millions in gift cards, they have been able to convince some "normal" people to fall for it.
I am a truly sarcastic individual. When my brother calls me I answer the phone "Whataya want and why should I care?" But I would walk through fire for the guy. That's the spirit of my OP. I don't think people who are less intelligent than I am should be rounded up and gassed. It was just my sarcastic way of saying "How can a normal person be convinced to do this?"
I see your point about PC police. That being said, sarcasm is not PC these days. We're all so sensitive. My family is a group of goofballs. My dad's pet name for me is "dipstick". But we have a fantastic father/son relationship.
"Come here and grab this, Dipstick. I had kids so I don't have to lift things."
That's hie way of saying....
"Come here, son. I need help. Your old man can't lift things any more like the hickory tree you knew as a kid. Thanks. Yer a good son."
We laugh a lot.... sometimes at each other. But it's more fun than walking around on eggshells all the time.
That carries over to how I communicate with the rest of the world. Some can take it. Some can't.
I have one true friend in this world. I have lots of friends, but one best friend who would do anything for me and I him.
The nicest thing I said to him yesterday was "Yer dumber than a bag of hammers."
But if he called me right now and said "I need you in Nashville." my response would be "I'm gonna go home and pack a bag. If you need me in four hours I'm gonna get a flight. If you need me in eleven hours I'm gonna drive. Ill call you back on the way to get details." And he knows that beyond a shadow of a doubt. He would do the same for me. If you were to listen in to a conversation between the two of us you would think we hate each other. We sound like an old married couple who only stay together because the only thing worse than being married is starting over. Whenever we're together my wife says "You guys just need to kiss and get it over with."
All that is to say, I'm not a cruel guy. I'm just a goofball who uses sarcastic language.
If I see an idiot who just jumped into a rushing river and can't swim, I'm not gonna stand there and point and laugh at the idiot. I'm gonna figure out a way to get the idiot out of the water.
